Customer Reviews:
not one of their best and still superb IMHO.......2002-05-25
This was the first album i listened to by LPD, though I had previously listened to a lot of songs. I must admit I was a bit disappointed at first. I bought it the same day together with 'Crushed velvet apocalypse' and 'The maria dimension', and those 2 I like a lot better than 'Golden age'
Still, this is a really good album, and some consider it as one of their best, and though i disagree, I must admit that not being one of the best by this really good band doesn't imply this isn't an amazing piece of music. It has its ups and downs, though.
I think this is one of the more listenable albums by LPD, and have some brilliant moments.
The album opens up with 'Maniac', a song with rock guitars and good melody, not especially catchy but more upbeat than usual. 'The talent contest' have nothing to do: quite slow, Ka-spel's voice is more soothing than in the first song. An average song, which applied to this band, means a good song. Then comes a vey catchy song, 'The more it changes', one of those songs whose happy melody contrasts with its sad lyrics. Good chorus, abrupt ending. Good techno-popish song. And then comes one of the masterpieces: 'Hotel noir' is one of those long, songs-that-tell-a-story-and-doesn't-need-a-chorus LPD are famous for. Emotive violins, good singing, almost perfect. 'Stille nacht' is an instrumental piece, listenable though nothing special. 'The month after' reminds me of a tango or sth, quite curious song: very good btw. 'Lisa's separation' is, in my opinion, the absolute mastrpiece of the album. Similar to 'Hotel noir' but even better, it has enough changes of sounds not to bore us. One of my top 10 songs I've ever heard. 'Black castles' is, I think, boring on purpose. With some reminiscences to The Beatles' 'I am the walrus' (Googoogachub!), it's a very electronic piece. and good. 'And even the vegetables screamed' is a very short instrumental piece. 'Regression' is a short spoken piece. 'Blacklist' is an indsutrial song, the more similar to NIN that LPD have ever done. I supposed that being an indsutrial music fan, this sgould be my favourite. But it's not. 'Methods' is a strange song, with very prominent vocls but there's sth I don't exactly like. 'Our lady in cervetory' is another string based song, good but a bit boring.
All in all, i recommend this album, it's quite listnable though stmes gets a bit boring. But it has 3 or 4 gems in it, and moreover...it's from The Legendary Pink Dots.
Classic Dots.......2002-05-24
With the golden age the dots produced a masterpiece of the most organic sounding electronic music you will ever hear. Unlike many of their contemporaries ( and some would say that the Dots have no contemporaries) this band used synthesisers and sequencers to create deep, warm almost orchestral vehicles for the songs.Like some bizarre meeting between Julian Cope (pop sensibility),Peter Hammill(darkness/angst) and Brian Eno(light/contemplation) this disc is a joy to listen to.
