5 out of 5 stars passionate, emotional offer by Asia.......2004-07-08

Great music, this cd is very memorable to me, during my times of isolation and loneliness, i got this on tape and i was just too carried away by the powerful songs and memorable melodies. from great ballads to hard rocking tunes. now that i got it on cd, the more i relieve the memories. Guaranteed good music!!

2 out of 5 stars "Under the surface here lies the unknown".......2004-01-28

Asia is one of the best bands of the 1980s, and any album of theirs deserves a listen. Aqua marked a change in Asia. Gone was John Wetton and in is vocalist John Payne. In the booklet photograph, Payne looks like a heavy metal singer with the leather vest and Slash-like top hat. He and rhythm guitarist Al Pitrelli look out of place next to legends Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer and Steve Howe. There is definitely a change of sound on this album. It starts with the best material, a short instrumental "Aqua 1" and the unmistakable Yes sound of "Who Will Stop the Rain." From there, the sound is more heavy and less Asia-like, "Back in Town" being a more evident example. Only snippets of keyboard on tracks like "A Far Cry" and "Someday" remind the listener that this is an Asia album. Payne also has a lot of soul in his voice especially in songs like "Lay Down Your Arms," which is an environmental track: "We used to live in a better world Where sky and water were free" and "Lay down your arms-surrender. You know you'll never get out of here" (unless we build cities on Mars). Asia usually has excellent finales, so I had high expectations for "The Voice of Reason." Actually, it is not unlike the others, just a little more involved. It sounds like it is going to build up into a great crescendo, but then just fizzles out. Overall, I was disappointed in this album. It just does not sound like Asia.

4 out of 5 stars Grade B+.......2003-12-22

Jeff Payne's first cd as vocalist and bassist, may also be the new lineup's best. It's close between this cd and their next one, ARIA. The group, even though they changed singers, still keep much of their signature sound, and Payne, who is not a carbon copy of old singer Wetton, still has the Asia delivery to his songs, of course it helps that rest of Asia is still intact. After this cd only Downes will be an orginal member. WHO CAN STOP THE RAIN, VOICE OF REASON, & DON'T CALL ME, are the closest to the orginal Asia, and are the best songs on the cd. LITTLE RICH BOY, is my least liked song on this cd. Group doesn't stray far from the old grounds, even with a new singer. Not a bad release from the reformed Asia.

3 out of 5 stars John Payne is no John Wetton.......2002-07-17

"Aqua" is the first Asia album to feature John Payne on lead vocals. Quite honestly, I stopped following the group as closely after John Wetton left. This album still has Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer, and Steve Howe, but it falls short of the previous releases. Yes, the signature keyboards and drums are there, but Payne simply cannot match Wetton's voice and bass. Some of the songs, such as "Love Under Fire" and "Lay Down Your Arms" are ok, but they don't come close to Wetton's songs from earlier albums. "Asrta, "Alpha", and "Asia" are much better than this one.

1 out of 5 stars Just awful.......2002-06-11

John Payne can not sing. He is an utter obstacle. If the songs were better (as they were on "Arena") I could get past it, but unfortunately they are not. "A Far Cry"(with some good slide work by Steve Howe) and "Who Will Stop the Rain" are fairly decent, but the rest of the songs sound uninspired, unfinished and uninteresting. The production is just as lifeless.
