Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The original swedish innovators.......2006-09-17

Long before Anglagard stirred the prog community with their highly influential releases the band Samla Mammas Manna emerged from Sweden in the early 1970's with their form of progressive rock which was every bit as daring, innovative, inventive, and complex. It is then a frustrating dissapointment that their original catalog is in such a state of dissemination. The Cuneiform label has released this live recording from the offshoot band Von Zamla displaying all the traces and characteristics making Samla Mammas Manna such a fantastic band. The defining quality of this band is the overwhelming joy and even outright humour and comedy in their approach to music. A huge void in progressive music which perhaps contributes to its elitism and misunderstanding in critical circles. But they could not be more serious about the perfection of their art. This is progressive rock of the highest order with a consistant ethic of innovation throughout. Even more amazing considering that the compositions are entirely instrumental (except for a little yodeling). Probably defined in the Rio catagory and utilizing basic rock instrumentation with well defined and intricate harmonic juxtapositions between oboe, organ or piano, guitar, bass and drums; the songs borrow from Eastern European folk themes and elaborated into delightful and full blown prog excursions closely resembling Gentle Giant perhaps. Basically, this band represents a fascinating aspect of some excellent progressive music during the prog Dark Ages (1983) providing a vital link to the innovative trends of some of todays most creative bands like Hamster Theater, Birdsongs of the Mesazoic, Miriodor and many more that aren't mentioned in the surviving and, in fact, thriving progressive music community.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Underrated Band.......2006-08-11

sorry if this sounds like a brag, but my band was fortunate enough to play on the same stage, the same night at a U.S. Festival when Samla Mammas Manna made played their first ever U.S. gig and they were AMAZING. They are probably one of the most inventive, melodic and talented 'progressive' bands ever. the only thing that keeps them from trumpting the 'bigger' names in this genre is their sense of humor, which is fantastic and well deployed. but let's face it, most prog fans are sort of pompous and somber and like mystical wizard dark soul poetry and don't like jokes. If you love Frank Zappa, you will ADORE this group - any album!

5 out of 5 stars That' s right...you said it right.......2004-10-21

Another reviewer said ' why has rock embraced the turn tables, the limb biscuit and the sampling, and not the bassoon?'. Listen to this and you will understand what he is talking about. GREAT BAND!

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe it's LIVE!!!!.......2004-03-29

Von Zamla is incredible to say the least. If you are not familiar with this euro progressive rock band and you LIKE progressive, yet accessable rock... this is a no brainer- MUST OWN! I was familiar with Manna and subsequent solo efforts associated with the group. For 1983 (literally the year), this is an outstanding concert performence from Radio Brenman ((sp?) German radio)as remastered by Cuniform and the band. Simply a large leap in audio restoration... and the tunes are fresh especially today! Some of the melodic complexities remind me of Gentle Giant (in their hey-day) & Art Zoyd. The general beats are complex but not irradic. The recording doesn't sound live a live recording, until you here the applause. Exquisite spin!
