Customer Reviews:
Some great remakes of Starship related tunes.......2004-07-04
This album is taken from a 2003 Starship dvd/cd combo called, "Greatest and Latest." "Greatest and Latest" was remakes of Starship, Jefferson Starship and Mickey Thomas songs that were recorded in late 2002 by the current lineup of Starship. All the vocals are handled by Mickey Thomas, since Grace Slick is no longer involved. It was eventually released in 2003 as an import-only (no US release). There were 14 songs on the original "Greatest and Latest" collection, this takes 10 of the remakes off the album.
The rerecorded tracks sound great, the guitars and songs are a little harder and crunchier. The keyboards and synthesizers have either been toned down significantly or removed entirely. Some of the songs, of course, were not originally recorded by Starship (but rather Jefferson Starship, etc.), but those sound good too, and they were remade because Mickey Thomas sung on the original versions of them anyway. As mentioned, this is 10 songs taken off an import only cd containing fourteen tracks originally. I do knock off a star for the fact they didn't use all 14 songs from "Greatest and Latest." It is tough to complain, though, since it is about the only way to hear these remakes unless you pay for a "Greatest and Latest" import. These remakes also appear on these albums by Starship in the US:
Starship s/t, 2004
"Forever Gold" 2003
Greatest Hits-Brilliant (label name is Brilliant) 2003
Greatest Hits-Delta (label name)
The best one to get is the 'Brilliant' label, but this collection here "Essential" isn't so bad. Again, the remakes sound good, it's just that there are no liner notes (some of these other US packagings have liner notes) and it only takes ten of fourteen songs from the original import. Otherwise, a good collection and some great remakes with the current lineup. Some of the songs stayed relatively the same and others have a few differences ("We built this city" has some different parts).
The best remakes: 'Sara', 'Fooled around and fell in love' 'We built this city' and 'Nothing's gonna stop us now', the last one sounds better without the studio polish.
