Under the direction of Fred Wolf--the man who helmed most of the early Little Rascals shorts--you might expect The Point to be a benignly silly children's romp. It is not. The real guiding force here is full-grown rascal Harry Nilsson, who not only wrote the story and songs that comprise this made-for-TV cartoon, but recorded, produced, and even narrated them as well. The Point follows the travails of a rather hapless round-headed boy named Oblio, who can't seem to get over in a land of pointed people and things. Rich with semantic trickery, The Point is probably the most existential children's yarn ever told. But there's an elegance to these songs, and a satirical wink to their content, that--like any great story--transcends the cartoon's "intended" audience. If you enjoyed The Point as a child, give it another spin; not for nostalgia's sake, but for the wholly different spell it casts on adult ears. --Matt Hanks

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Where is the original film to accompany the cd album.......2005-12-15

Music is fantastic, wish we could watch the original film, aired on ABC back in the 60's, with the music, want that animated film, where is it????

P.S. The new version for kids is not the same

5 out of 5 stars Rock Man.......2003-12-09

The most vivid memory of this movie (and it's soundtrack) is when I think of the Rock Man. I will never forget this small piece of wisdom. " You see what you want to see, and you hear what you want to hear." You must look to be able to "see", and just think of how many times you look without really seeing! Take a look around sometime, you might be suprised at what you can see. What a wonderful story.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't this make a great musical for high schoolers?.......2003-01-15

Of course, if you like Nilsson you'll adore "The Point." His work lives on. I wish the family of Harry Nilsson would consider re-releasing the movie and the rights to the music and text. For a long time I have imagined a bunch of amateur actors and musicians putting this on annually at high schools all over the country. Don't you think so?

5 out of 5 stars NO WAY!! :-).......2002-09-07

I had this as an LP growing up... I have looked and looked for it to share with my kids. I am thrilled to find it now. I loved this story so much. All of the adventures that we are taken on and everything that this boy and his dog go through to "fit in" is a timeless tale that once heard will be with you for the rest of your life. If I could give 10 stars I would!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the world's best records.......2002-08-21

This was the first album I ever bought for myself as a child. I was 8. I don't know exactly how many times I've bought the vinyl since, and played it till it warped, or given it away and bought two more. Then cassettes, now CDs.

I went on to become a musician, scolarships and a degree in the subject. I now make music that I feel is entire infuenced by this initial spark, and I'm devoted to making works as intelligent for young minds.
