Customer Reviews:
A Solid Disc.......2004-02-21
You are likely interested in this disc because you are a WSP fan or perhaps an All Stars fan. This disc is neither the jam friendly tunes you have come to love from WSP or the heavy blues of, at least the earlier, All Stars goodies. It is, however, a tight, solid release where the talents of all of the players shine. Listening to this disc is like sitting down with Jojo and having a beer together as opposed to going to a full on party with Panic. This is not a disc that will change your life, but it is a solid addition to the Jammy Family Tree. Definitely worth a spin.
GOOD album.......2002-08-17
A lot of people from the Panic camp like to bag on this album because it doesn't "jam." Okay, this is not a "jam band" record. JoJo and the rest of the band have other interest besides improvisational music.
I Expect Much More From These Musicians!!.......2001-12-29
John "JoJo" Hermann of Widespread Panic fame, has come up short in his first effort at a solo career. This was something he has been waiting a long time to do, and I feel that this disc just does not meet the standard that is possible from a man of his talent. He has a great supporting cast behind him, with the Dickinson bro's of the North Mississippi All-Stars.
This disc is worth the money but I think after a while of listening you can hear what I mean. Maybe without the skills of Widespread Panic, JoJo can not carry a band on his own. Hopefully there will be 2nd solo effort with more effort put into the final product.
Surprisingly Good!.......2001-06-07
I have to admit I was a little hesitant to purchase JoJo's Smiling Assassin CD. I love his work with Widespread Panic, but was unsure how he'd fare with the boys from North Mississippi AllStars and Bloodkin backin' him up. I should have known better, because JoJo and Co. bust out high-energy folk rock with some pop sensibility and blues thrown in the mix, at times flirting with what some might consider alt.country (check out the title track). I even hear some influence via the Beatles (Abaline). All the songs are really tight and Luther's guitar work is, as always, impressive, bluesy and smooth. I have heard criticisms that JoJo's old work with Beanland was just bar-band music and his tunes with WSP are just a continuation of that in a jam band format. This sweet disc should dispel any such misconceptions. Check this one at and you'll be smilin' right back at the assassin.
