Disappointment Redefined!.......2005-04-26
I don't write tons of reviews. But as much as I felt compelled by excitement to write a rave review for Karie's previous CD, "Kahimi Karie", so did I feel compelled by disappointment to write this one. Everything that made "Kahimi Karie" magical was missing in this one. It's not that I expected more of the same ... and it's not that I don't "get" artistic experimentation and growth. I think it's refreshing to learn of an artist's diversity. But when it's time for the CD to spin and the music to fill the air, all that matters is that the music makes that air dance. This is hard for me to say after enjoying "Kahimi Karie" so much. And I'll say that "K.K.K.K.K." doesn't take anything away from that one. But I have to say this: I don't like this CD. I didn't want to play even one song again. When I first heard "Kahimi Karie", I must have played it 20 times in a few days ... and it hasn't made it to my rack yet. But this one ... I couldn't get through a second round. I MAY play it again in a week or so just to see if there's something there that has sprouted, but I'm expecting this one will end up for sale wherever I can sell it. And I COULDN'T WAIT to get this in the mail! It was late by a weekend. It was probably my most anxiously awaited Monday in recent times ... and then the most dissatisfying.
If I had to summarize my dislikes in two words I could do that easily: The Music! It was incredible how those involved arranged the various styles, genres, effects, instruments, and Karie's voice so seamlessly on "Kahimi Karie" to make great solid music. A group of people slightly less talented could have easily created a chaotic mix of unassociated sounds. Unfortunately, that's what happened in this case. The only partially redeeming element is Karie's beautiful voice. You could record her singing in a Tornado and the Tornado would fade from notice. But with that being said, her vocals didn't feel ALIVE this time. Beautiful of course ... but just there. She didn't feel connected to it all. But I don't see how she could have ... there was no flow, no heart, no electricity into which she could breath her magic. It would have been interesting to have been a fly on the wall during these compositions; just to see what was going on that resulted in this.
I would love to be writing another scintillating review for Karie's music. I would love even more for this CD to be scintillating ... but it's not. I hope that her future American releases will be better.
Stop thinking........2004-01-13
This evening I was out trying to get some facts about Momus (producer of this recording) and his relationship with Kahimi Karie. (I think they are actually married, or were, or something.)
In the course of this research, I found several reviews of Karie's recordings, and all of them are ruined by the reviewers thinking too much; mostly thinking about sex.
None of this is necessary, as you do not get to have sex with Kahimi Karie simply by purchasing the cd. I don't know if there is some means by which you can accomplish this. I don't particularly care. These songs are just songs, the result of the collaboration between Momus and Ms. Karie ("Karie-san") and whatever roducers and musicians are involved.
You want these songs to say something other than what they say? Perhaps you should become a songwriter.
The people who mutter and sputter over this record...I think they have a problem that has not yet fully emerged. They should stay away from schoolyards.
The question that is more important is, how do you feel about Hello Kitty? There is a scale that goes from deep abiding hatred to indifference to sardonic amusement to interest and, ultimately, stretches (in rare cases) into the area of sexual arousal. If your feelings regarding Hello Kitty are sardonic amusement or better, this record is for you.
If you are, in fact, sexually aroused by Hello Kitty, this record is also for you, along with a check-in at your local mental health facility.
The review based on zero knowledge of the subject.......2002-04-06
I don't know anything about this CD, but it's selling for the used price of 1.99 at Odyssey Records in Las Vegas. I will probably take a road trip there to get it. Is anybody interested?
Interesting, but lacking........2000-01-14
There is definitely something about Kahimi Karie that you won't find in many other artists. For one thing, she sings all her songs in a babyish, almost breathless whisper. You really have to hear it to understand what I'm saying.
Give her points for uniqueness, certainly. But I can't help but think Kahimi's one-of-a-kind voice belongs elsewhere. Before I listened to it, I read over the lyrics to the creepily-titled CD, K.K.K.K.K., and some of the songs really intrigued me. Strange but effective (and sometimes hard-hitting) lyrics pop up everywhere. What went wrong was when I *listened* to these songs - Kahimi's voice is simply not suited to sing lines such as those in her cover of "The Harder They Come" or the strange track "The Symphonies Of Beethoven". These songs need a forceful voice to propel statements like 'I'm gonna get my share now, what's mine'. Kahimi whispers it like she's in a trance.
Now, I have nothing against her voice in itself. Indeed, four of the songs on the album are in French, and although admittedly I don't speak the language, in these songs - which are of a more rolling, easy temperament - Miss Karie's voice seems to fit.
