4 out of 5 stars Trance-like audio torture.......2007-03-14

Oh yea this is good stuff. I think I prefer his more abstract instrumental work better (FM Einheit and Page Hamilton colabs included) but this is nice work. Throbbing and pounding. Fully grating and repetive, not for everyone to be sure. More guitary than Sonic Youth or Big Black but still scraping and gouging. The band is really just a prop for Caspar but it's all good. In spots I hear some Hendrix and in other parts, the Birthday Party joins the scene.

5 out of 5 stars Living spirit of metal machine music.......2004-10-15

Caspar Brotzman Massaker will delight a small segment of the listener population out there, and the rest will be left cold. If you like Einsturzende Neubauten, Big Black, or Sonic Youth, you are likely to enjoy this.

My most amusing way of explaining this Massakar album is as a soundtrack to a woolly mammoth hunt, and the bloody festivities 'round the fire thereafter. So for those of us who have no interest in stalking and killing large beasts using primitive weapons, this may not be a good album. I guess it says something about me that it has been one of my favorites since I bought it in about '95.

I wrote this review some weeks ago, and want to add the caveat that so far, I haven't enjoyed any other Caspar Brotzman album near as much as this one. That doesn't diminish my pleasure in this one, but none of the others seem to cohere as complete works like "Home." I still give it the same rating, and just observe that it's sometimes like that in the arts. I think something really worked in this album. I have purchased all his CDs however, and I'll review them as I listen.
