Customer Reviews:
Finally..........2006-02-28
I've been trying to find this album for 20 years. I was living in Michigan in '70-'71, and I was working nights in a lounge band six nights a week, so I didn't get out much, but all my GM factory buddies kept talking up this local group, 'Savage
Grace', describing them as a sort of rock trio with a classical pianist. Well, the local radio got a copy of their first album and put 'Lady Rain' in the rotation, and I was immediately sold!
I LOVE this song. So I got ahold of a copy, and the whole album totally supported my initial impression. The recording is very well done, and they sound like a young band who is fresh and energetic and deeply into what they do.
The writing is well handled by the guitarist and pianist (the
major cover tune, 'All Along the Watchtower', is the weakest cut
on the whole album, and it is pretty good), and the vocals are
lively, and match the energy level. There are some fairly primitive screams in a couple of tunes, but they convey the live
character of the group (you can tell that they were a very intense act). But, what really impresses me is that the entire album holds up so well. I hadn't heard it for at least 25 years,
and I found that much of what I play on guitar, and much of my
style was profoundly influenced by this one particular album. I
have been playing licks on guitar all of my adult life that I
inadvertantly stole from them. (Thanks, Ron). The drummer (right
on the ragged edge of being over the top) plays so in synch with
the bassist (incredible bass tone), that they seem at times like
one cat. The pianist has an almost perfect touch, and adds a note
of musicality that gives this album a tastefulness hard to find
before or since.
My only slight (VERY slight ) complaint is that the recording of the piano is just slightly overwhelmed by the power trio nature of the band. But, it's almost perfect. (Note that the
guitarist doesn't ever just shred the parts - they are all meticulously constructed and melodically conceived and played.)
Unfortunately, I can't do justice to the second disc in this revue. It seems to be a more rushed product, (a common occurrance in the industry), put out to capitalize on the first album's popularity. The writing doesn't feel as well crafted, and the overall sound doesn't feel as polished...but just maybe
I haven't given it much of a chance. The first album is just SO good!
