Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Without the burden of words or meaning........2004-02-12

355, an album put together from a series of recording sessions by Steve Von Till and Kris Force, turns out to be a beautifully enchanting work.

Being recorded on several different dates over a period of years, the album is somewhat eclectic - it ranges from dark industrial noise to soothing and melodic acoustic features with guitars, strings, and flowing, droning, alyrical vocals. The fact that Culper Ring chose to avoid many distinguishable lyrics is perhaps a good thing; words (cumbersome - in the form of lyrics and also song titles) could easily have shattered the fragile beauty which this album presents. Generally, 355 flows quite well through different musical styles and moods. It is, however, perhaps a more subconscious musical work of art than anything else. As an experience, it can be seen as somewhat limited. Rather than branching off and exploring vast areas of musical territory, 355 weaves in and out of a few select niches, creating a very meditative and peaceful feeling which envelops the entire album. Those looking for vast experimentation and those looking for hooks or catches will certainly not find what they seek on this CD. However, those looking for a deep, reflective surface which mirrors the inner peace of the human soul - dark and light - will find the perfect means within this recording.

As a deeply subconscious exploration, this album is perfect for meditation, reflection, relaxation, and even sleeping. The rewards earned also through active listening are subtle yet powerful.

Overall, despite its feeling of brevity and somewhat narrow scope, this album resonates with a shimmering beauty, making it well worth a place in any music enthusiast's collection - especially those who enjoy industrial and acoustic ambient styles.
