Album Description

An untimely retrospective from the Minneapolis wild bunch who handily kicked ass on their garage rock brethren of the early '90s (whilst not kicking one another's asses, more often than not!) A multi-talented melting pot, the Spectors were formed as the musical godchildren of Minnesota's legendary mod thrashers The Funseekers. Though not widely known outside the Midwest, a few forays into the NYC area and an exploratory junket to Iceland garnered them a notable following

5 out of 5 stars Minneapolis kids show 'em how rock'n'roll is done........2006-10-22

The Spectors never got much more than a cult following, even in their hometown of Minneapolis where they existed mostly under the radar while less worthy "mainstream alternative" acts like Polara and Soul Asylum hogged all the local press. For a while it fell to a handful of local DJs and small enclaves of fans scattered around the globe (and their carefully guarded stashes of 7-inch vinyl) to carry the torch. Luckily, thanks to this compilation of Spectors recordings spanning their brief but tempestuous 4-year career, there's no reason to miss out any longer.

The best songs here are covers of late-60s psychedelia ("Treacle Toffee World", "Oh How To Do Now") and songs that sound like they should have been written 40 years ago ("Rhubarb Ruby"), but the production is all state of the art, and the musical sensibility is more in line with The Cramps or Dirtbombs than your average 60s revival band.

It's true that much of the Spectors' legend comes from their notorious infighting and backstabbing - more than one concert ended (or began) with somebody storming off stage - and be assured the rivalry was not all in good fun. But the tension works to the band's advantage musically. With every member of the band trying their damnedest to top every other, the overall sound is huge, loud, spirited, sexy and fun.
