Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Understand it.......2003-02-01

This is a great album if you understand what a tribute album is.
These aren't a bunch of bands trying to be NIN. The object of a tribute album is for the bands to remain true to themselves, not just copy the title group. There are some great ORIGINAL versions of classic NIN songs on this ablum.

1 out of 5 stars Never Tamper With Perfection.......2002-02-14

Starved for any new NIN release, I bought both volumes of the Coverd in Nails tribute albums. I don't think I've ever made a bigger mistake.

While Vol. 1 had a handful of mildly tolerable tracks, this one is totally lacking. The cover of "The Only Time" is interesting at most, since the vocals were done by a talented female singer, but nothing is great beyond that.

I was looking forward to hearing the cover of "Terrible Lie" by Guenter Schulz and En Esch of KMFDM, the only near-equivelent to Nine Inch Nails and perhaps the only band authorized to even CONSIDER covering a Nails song. Sadly, the track lacks the brilliance of Sascha K (of KMFDM) to make this a genuinely decent tribute. The cover is alright, especially if you enjoy the KMFDM spin-off band Slick Idiot (of which Schulz and Esch founded), but it did nothing for me, other than make me long for an evening of cranking up classic NIN (Downward Spiral) or KMFDM (Nihil) records.

Not even die-hard fans would appreciate this record. If anything, it will only prolong the desire to hear the next installment of Trent Reznor's discography, whenever that may be.

3 out of 5 stars Worth the $$$, barely.......2001-05-18

To be honest, I wasn't expecting to like this CD. I bought it mainly for the Esch/Schultz Terrible Lie, as I am both a major NINnie and KMFDM fan. That said, though, there are a few standout tracks on this which do make it worth the money... sadly, the Terrible Lie is not among them.

Sin is the #1 track on the disk. Purists may complain, as it is very clubby, but for those too soon to forget, Pretty Hate Machine was a club-industrial album in its day. My first introduction to NIN was at Tracks, a dance club, in DC when they were promoting PHM. This cut, by Razed in Black, reimagines it as a club song of today with great success. The other standouts in my mind are GodBox's The Only Time and and Synical's Burn (suprisingly, as I'm not a fan).

As to the tracks to not even play, Inertia absolutely butchers Sanctified (my favourite PHM track) and Lucifer Scale totally missed the point of Last. The rest of the tracks have some merit, if small. I do want to credit Goteki for a valiant attempt at Suck that just falls short of the mark.

If you're buying this expecting a whole CD of worthwhile music, don't bother. If you want a few really decent NIN covers and a little room noise to boot, though, go for it.

3 out of 5 stars Plays Well With Others.......2001-05-12

First of all, there is an overabundance of ebm & club beats in these covers, which spins well @ the clubs, but may deter home listeners. Some of these tracks are even bordering on techno, ("sin" for ex.) not that it's bad, but indutsrial purists should keep an open mind. I am not a big fan of Razed In Black, but the RIB track here is great. The Rosetta Stone cover is cool too, I have already spun it at a Vegas club, it seemed to go over very well. The most interesting approach to NIN on this disc is by Filmstrip. Their version of "we're in this together" is a dark tribal ritual. As a DJ, I can recommend this CD to other DJs & serious music collectors, but if you are primarily into NIN-type music, you might get culture shock from the variety of styles here.

1 out of 5 stars Oh my god...........2001-04-25

Hmmm.

I didn't think it was possible to make Nine Inch Nails sound bad, but I've been proven wrong. This is terrible, terrible stuff. Perhaps if you didn't like NIN then you could find something meaningful and nice in this, but to me (big fan) this is rape of a fine musician's work.
