A Disillusioned Marriott Left the Band, Recruited Ex-herd Guitarist Peter Frampton to Form the Hard-rock Combo Humble Pie. Little Big Man.......2007-02-22
Some stats: TIN SOLDIER 3-cd box set, 64 tracks digitally remastered
Nicely packaged cardboard slip-box, individual slim-jewel cases, very detailed bio booklet with track by track annotation.
CD#1...(24 tracks) Total time= 70:45 Steve Marriot/The Small Faces. Ah, the essence of the 1960's with The Small Faces. Preceeded by rare 1960 recording he did with the London Theatre's performance of 'Oliver' (at the age of 13). Strangely enough though, no recording of Itchycoo Park(!)
CD#2...(19 tracks) Total time= 79:59 The 'Humble Pie' Years. Into the 1970's with boogie-rock monster Humble Pie. 11 tracks include Peter Frampton. Selects the best and most varied of remaining Pie material.
CD#3...(21 tracks) Total time= 78:51 Steve Marriot with assorted line-ups. Absolute smokin material he recorded in various guises until his untimely death in a house fire in 1991.
Very well done anthology. Respectful, inclusive, decisive. Each cd can stand on it's own as representational of the best vocal rock in the stylings of it's era.
Steve Marriot was a giant of a vocalist throughout his life. The thing most interesting that I got from this box set was how his particular delivery never gets lost in the music, even through the somewhat formulaic 70's Humble Pie (the choices here on cd#2 cover acoustic blues, Stonesey rock, pub-rock country ballads, and blistering arena boogie thunder.
Sadly, just as his life was getting over some mis-steps and mishaps, his life was cut short at the age of 44.
Btw, there is an excellent 3-cd box set (live concert) memorial tribute to the man and his music called 'One More Time For The Old Tosser' recorded at the London Astoria in 2001. He is fondly remembered with renditions of his music (along with Cockney banter) from original Small Faces and Humble Pie bandmates, Peter Weller, Noel Gallagher, Midge Ure, John's Children, The Mods, and other "blokes". (it's got 'Itchycoo Park' too!!!) The event is also on DVD.
Tin Soldier: Little Guy slayed Giants.......2006-02-25
Steve Marriott wrote 2 of the 60's greatest songs of all times -Tin Soldier and Afterglow of Your Love. Before that he emerged as an unstoppable r'n b shouter with one of the strongest and distinctive voices of the period ( think Jagger,Steve Winwood etc.)as well as leaving behind several classic albums during the Small Faces epoch. The years beyond with Humble Pie & the Steve Marriott "Solo Years" are sprinkled with so many gems one can only be gobsmacked at Marriott's talent : this guy was a true one-man musical Titan who persistently delivered on his own terms ; pop-fashionability he left behind with the artifice of the 60's.
Every track on these albums is valid / a winner / just plain GOOD. All 3 dics are period-segmented and each works as a seperate whole.
