Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sara, We Love You!.......2002-01-03

I must be older than the other reviewers of this CD. Way back when, Sara was the bass player with Robert Fripp's still experimental League Of Gentlemen. Then, one day, she was spotted playing bass on the B-52s "Love Shack" video (and the album it came from). Then there was the Gang of Four. And now the Ani DiFranco connection. This girl has been around! And she is truly a great bass player! Wow! How nice to find she finally has a CD of her own.

In some ways, this music is more "Pop" than "Rock". But, like Peter Gabriel's "Steamhammer" and "Big Time", it's utterly compelling pop music. I find myself hearing many of the hooks and riffs daily as I go about what I normally do to get things done. I often feel a need to go back and listen to several of the songs all over again...just to see if it really is that good. Yes, it is!

Given my musical interests, "Pop" is usually a dirty word to me. But, it *is* a legitimate art form. And some artists (Sara being one of them) can bring it home with a punch. This CD is well worth the investment. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Ani's bassist goes solo........2001-11-11

Sara Lee is a very distinguished bassist playing for the likes of Ani DiFranco, the Indigo Girls, the B-52's, and Joan Osborne. On her first solo album, you can hear her very soothing voice along with her very prominent bass playing. Having two songs penned by Ani DiFranco and having her appear as guest back-up vocals was very nice. Her songs are very laid back. This album isn't exactly the greatest one in the world but very good nonetheless. She's excellent live (that's how I first found out about this album) so for that reason you should buy the album and get ready to see her perform these songs live.

4 out of 5 stars Great New Music.......2001-07-10

Sara Lee's debut is all that a listener could expect from a first album and more. Her long experience as a bass player with everyone from Gang of Four to Ani Difranco is evident in the songs on this album, as they are well thought out, powerful, and full of great bass lines. Her unique brand of funk-pop is refreshing, new, and sure to draw the listener into whatever song may be playing. The songs on the album give the listener both a chance to contemplate and an opportunity to dance. With strong songwriting and ever stronger musicianship, 'Make it Beautiful' is a gorgeous offering, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the music of James Brown, Ani Difranco, or even the Indigo Girls.

4 out of 5 stars Just as good live!.......2000-11-04

I went to the Ani DiFranco concert the other night in Boston. Sara Lee was the opening artist. i was totally amazed. I havent hear bass played that good. Right after the concert i went out and bought the CD. It is all i listen too. Her voice is so smoth yet not. So when u get a chance go see her live and buy the CD!!
