Penelope Delivers.......2004-11-03
Underproduced in spots, and accompanied by able partner Pat Johnson, Pale Green Girl is one of those minor gems that never grab you by the throat but come away as listenable and memorable on their own terms.
Houston's knack for wringing sentiment out of even the most oblique lyrics is back burnered for this effort- unlike the paid-by-the-word approach on Tongue, one of her least memorable efforts. Simple jangle guitar background and her plaintive, even if not overpowering vocals help propel standout songs such as Take My Hand, Hole, Bottom Line, Pale Green Girl, Walnut, and Soul Redeemer. Redeemer especially forces itself on you with a hypnotic underpinning, whereupon the listener is grabbed by the throat with a banshee wail in the past 40 seconds, not unreminscent of her Avengers days. A nice counterpoint indeed.
What I appereciate about Houston is her ability to transcend the phases of her musical life, while at the same time incorporating all styles into her new release. She's capable of laying down the sweetest, loveliest tracks you can imagine, then grabbing your throat in the same or the next song.
This is a very nice intro to Penelope Houston's adult work.
This is a great record.......2004-10-07
I was turned onto Penelope Houston by Richie Unterberger's Book, "Unkown Legends of Rock'n'Roll." Even though this record had not come out at the time of the book's publication, I would recommend this as a great first-listen. This record is loaded with good music - - great songs with great lyrics. This is the one that I'll be giving to people as a gift this year - - anyone who appreciates good music will enjoy this record.
Terrific album from a One-of-a-kind Performer.......2004-05-24
I've been a fan of Penelope Houston since her days in the Avengers. I have pretty much all of her stuff, Avengers and solo, and this ranks up with the best of it. The melodies are strong, the arrangements are rocking with more than a hint of a 60s feel, and her vocals are better than ever. This is fast becoming my favorite of hers, along with "The Whole World." I especially love "Flight 609," "Take My Hand," "Hole," and the title track.
