5 out of 5 stars They were the Beatles of Ann Arbor.......2005-01-03

First of all, Frank Allison does not perform anymore. I came across his email address a few years ago, asked him what was up and ordered a cd from him. He wrote that he has problems with his vocal cords and that aside, it sounded like he was just fed up in general. I have heard hide nor hair from him or of him since. Anyway, this set documents the last show of the best line-up of the band (with Dan Beckett on guitar) and although they sound a little sluggish , what can I say? It's Frank. A live show was always a good time and they will be missed. If you can, dear reader, seek out all of the Frank Allison material out there, and enjoy the work of a man who should have been a contender.

5 out of 5 stars Is Detroit work'n'troubles music great or what?.......2003-10-27

Is it just me or is this Frank music great?

Technically, you'd have to say that Frank is a local music guy. And objectively I must like it because I'm from around here.

Everyone has their favorite bar band. Every town has one.

But is this really so? Well, of course it is. That's why the world goes round. Great music isn't really that surprising, is it?

Anyway, I have a hunch that Frank is bigger than local. His big-band, rompin', rockin' tunes are rough and boisterous yet still simple and friendly. It's big bouncy goofy dance stuff.

--And it's all about cars that don't start, crazy coworkers on security guard jobs, work crews and peanut butter sandwiches, doing wheelies on motorcycles, hot girlfriends who you suffer for, repo-men. I mean, these aren't just Detroit concepts are they? Detroit is where cool things come from and Frank is one of them. Nationally cool. He has something to tell you, to share, to bounce off you.

It's too bad the goof sang so crazy that he tore his vocal cords and can't sing anymore. He really did distort and put out the goofy sounds and crazy howls and hollers. But we still have everything he's done. Get whatever you can!

3 out of 5 stars Earth To Frank - Where Are You?.......2002-02-22

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, along about the time I realized that if not dead, rock and roll was terminally ill and on life support, and before going to bars started to make me feel both depressed and old, the highlight of any weekend was when either Frank Allison or See Dick Run played at the mecca of all things real, earthy, and geniune in local pop music: Lili's 21 in Hamtramck, MI. Now it appears the be-all, end-all for local scenesters is to line up and fall all over themselves in the hopes of catching a glimpse of Kid Rock, as sad a commentary on star culture as you're likely to find. Allison, an odd duck if there ever was one, apparently lived on a farm in Chelsea, MI, where he and his ever revolving band of ragged louts known as the Odd Sox created some brilliant, hook-filled tales about having your girlfriend stolen ("Jay"), bill collectors ("Crediting Men's Hayride"), car problems ("Cash For My Car"), and um, I'm not really sure what "The Rodent Of Love" is about. Stylistically, they're all over the map, from rock to power pop to country to jazz, all delivered with Allison's trademark twisted tenor. I hesitate to recommend this live disc as an introduction to Allison's knack for turning a lyric and writing a hook, but unless any of his early indie releases, in particular "Monkey Business," come back into print or you can find them used, "Pig Out" will have to suffice. Now if only someone had the vision to make the power pop genius of See Dick Run available to a wide audience...

5 out of 5 stars Frank.......1999-11-30

Frank's music makes me happy. It brings back memories of the twice monthly concerts he and the Odd-sox would perform in A2 that we would never miss. I was at this concert, and love this CD because of it. Frank's music is a wonderful ecletic mix of rock, hill-billy, jazzy music. It is a must. Unfortunately, there will be no more original music from Frank, he has Spasmodic Dysphonia and can no longer sing. If you want to learn more about Frank, check out his web-site, he has one as of August, 1999. Pictures, art, stories, limited editions and more abound on this site.
