Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Ummm...Ok...........2005-04-05

Based on a review I read on here...I took a chance and ordered this CD.

While the performance IS top notch...imho,it ranks right at the top of CD's I'll probably never play again. Why? In this day and age, to produce something that sounds like it was recorded in the late 40's is shameful. No dynamics....nada..none...

From the first few notes, I thought I was going to hear something special. Then David and Linda start singing. WHAT? What's going on here? Why does it sound like they are in the garage instead of my living room? From there, it's all a disapointment.

Give me back my half an hour..

5 out of 5 stars THIS Is Worth Having.......2004-04-13

Back in the late 1960s, It's A Beautiful Day was one of the most exciting, innovative rock bands around. Bandleader David LaFlamme brought his virtuoso violin to the forefront of the San Francisco sound and with the band's eponymous debut and follow-up album Marrying Maiden, developed quite a cult following. Then, after a couple of weak subsequent albums and some abysmal solo efforts, it seemed as though LaFlamme's star had flamed out permanently.
Had I not seen this CD while perusing another site, I would remain blissfully unaware of its existence. What caught my attention right away were the color scheme similarities of the CD cover to the artwork on his first band's debut album. Then I read a couple of reviews, looked at the songlist, and decided to take a chance on it.
I took that chance with a great deal of trepidation as there is still a whiff of the stench generated by his first solo album lingering in my nostrils. As it turned out, my fears were unfounded. From the first notes of White Bird, I was back in musical heaven. LaFlamme's violin has rarely sounded better, the vocal harmonies are excellent, and the rest of the band just cooks.
Let me tell you what I think is good here: the excellent rendition of White Bird, the better-than-original Bombay Calling, the soaring new composition Swept Away, a great remake of Time Is; a virtuoso rendition of Girl With No Eyes; and an all out old-style San Francisco Sound jam on Santa Cruz.
What didn't I like? Frankly, Who's Gonna Love Me and Pick Up Sticks both stink of the formulaic corporate-rock pap so prevalent in the 1980s while Lost in Paradise is just OK.
