Album Description
Subtitled - Lost Songs & Rarities 1995-2001! The Seattle based alt-country act's second compilation of odds & sods, the followup to 'Death Valley Days'. This two CD-set features 29 songs 'that got away' between 1995 & 2001 - tracks for compilations, cover-versions, remixes, outtakes, only one live-track & a lot of B-sides for singles that were never released. In reverse order, too, the album starts with studio-material from August 2001 & ends with the title-track from the Glitterhouse Mailorder-Only CD 'Where The Air Is Cool & Dark', recorded in `96. 'Drunken Soundtracks' features a handful of excellent tracks from the major-labels days that only saw the light of days on CD-singles or promotional releases.
Customer Reviews:
So much better than could you have hoped.......2005-04-06
The words "2CD collection of out-takes" will strike fear into the heart of the most devoted fan. And if you got as far as reading a review then I must assume that you are a fan. Frankly my expectation were low when I started to listen the first time, since in addition I felt that the more recent Walkabouts output had been more of the same rather than new.
What you get is 2CDs of first rate material that remind you of why you love the Walkabouts. Eclectic, offbeat, diverse and expressed in a rich variety of tones. Given the dates of the material you shouldn't be surprised that the sound matches that of The Devil's Road and Trail of Stars, but this albums closest sibling is probably Satisfied Mind. The band are relaxed and enjoying themselves; there is no feeling of straining to create a coherent whole; so like at a great concert with an audience who are ready to listen, the band get to give a range of expression.
I'm not saying you'll like everything, but if you're a fan I think you'll be so glad you gave it the benefit of the doubt, and where many collections of out-takes are piles of rust, this is a collection of gems. IMO.
