This CD features two albums by the Ventures.

Theme From Shaft was released in 1972. It was rush released in the wake of Isaac Hayes' hit version of the title song. It features their normal mix of cover versions of other people's hits and original tunes. The album is notable for being the first Ventures album to feature a "real" vocal song, instead of just instrumentals. "Deep, Deep in the Water" is a rather nice country-rock song written and sung by organist John Durrill. The instrumentals are well played, as usual.

The Horse was released in 1968. It featured the debut of new guitarist Gerry McGee, who gave the group a "harder" sound. The album was about as close as the Ventures ever came to recording a soul album, thanks to a soulful horn section being featured on many of the tunes. The expanded sound resulted in one of the group's better albums. The whole album is enjoyable, but my favorite is a wacky version of Tiny Tim's hit "Tip-Toe Thru the Tulips With Me".
