Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One short.......2000-11-26

The only thing letting this down, seeing as it is a best of cd, is the fact that "Shipwrecked" from "Satellites" is not included. And yes, the reason for that is beacause of "Satellites" being released on another label, and not because none of the songs "made it" onto this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars "Best of" from the BEST unknown 80's band!.......1999-04-11

It's true that this compilation only has songs from "Swimmer" and "Creeping Up On Jesus". However, that's NOT a bad thing! This compilation also contains, "Voodoo Baby" which was the "b-side' of "European Rain". Since it's nearly impossible to find the original CD's, this compilation is well worth having! There's also a Big Dish website out there - search for it at UBL. This was the some of the best "pop" music to come from the 80's (though to me they were "new wave" as they had a distinct sound and never got enough airplay)! I once heard a reviewer say that "....the Big Dish are a cross between the Moody Blues and Talking Heads" and while I don't totally agree with that, I can see how the analogy came about. It's well worth your time and effort to seek out the recordings this band made! Now if only they'd do a CD of all the "b-sides" and some live stuff! My favorite song is "Wishing Time": The sincerity he sings with reveals the true pain of anyone that has loved and lost. Enjoy the experience!

5 out of 5 stars Classic "best of" from a much missed and underated band............1999-04-07

For anyone who likes intelligent, crafted, lasting music, this album is a must. Without doubt "The Big Dish" were one of the best and most underated bands to unfortunately slip away without reaching the masses and receiving the critical acclaim they so richly deserved. As in the title "Rich Man's Wardrobe", this album is a collection of richly textured compositions with classy timeless tunes that were catchy and addictive without being "poppy" or sickly. I was a fan from the early days of the band, and could never understand why the public did not latch on to them and take them to heart. They were blatantly Scottish in style, whilst universal in appeal: ie - everyone likes a good tune. My feelings are that they were too good for their time - not disposable enough. This album is a great example of why their music will live on, and why those that knew them will always miss their brand of interlectual outpourings. Only featuring tracks from the first two albums (the third "Satellites" was not released on Virgin and therefore could not donate to it), there is still more than enough class on this CD to keep you singing on a rainy day, and keep you harking back to the days when music WAS music, and not just a 3 second riff sampled umpteen times. These boys COULD play, and tracks such as "Swimmer", "Slide" and "Faith Healer" are guaranteed to illuminate your day. Five stars is a very fair appraisal of this CD, because basically it's CLASS. Miss at you peril!!
