Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT songs, INCREDIBLE sound! DIG it!!!.......2005-07-22

From Montreal come THE CHAINS, one of the best bands I've heard in the last 5 years. I was at The Balcony Bar in Philly (upstairs in The Trocadero theatre), a place notorious for bad air circulation, terrible acoustics and abominable sound equipment (ask The Omega Men-- THEY know!). Following the warm-up set by Mondo Topless (who I actually went to see!) came on this new outfit I'd never heard of before-- and I had my mind completely blown that night. These guys sounded GOOD-- REALLY good-- despite where they were playing. I loved every song they did-- and just HAD to get the CD on my way out the door. (I'd have stayed longer, but was on the verge of choking to death from the cigarette smoke-- I envy bar-goers in California!! --so I never did get to see the headliners, The Cynics.)

ON TOP OF THINGS! quickly became one of my most-played new CDs. There just isn't a bad song here, but a few of them are even better than the others. My top faves include "Loving Man" and "Look The Other Way"-- you can bet if I were a DJ on some indy station I'd be giving them airplay as often as possible. Other I love include "Her Name Is Love", "Nothing Left Behind", "Baby What You Want Me To Do" (how could anyone NOT dance while this is on??), "Fortune Teller" (an unusual love story with a surprise ending), "Nervous Breakdown" (prior to this I'd only heard this one by Pink Slip Daddy, a truly fun & "demented" recording-- nice to hear a "normal" version of it) and "It's Not The End" (a wonderful mellow tune amidst the rockers).

I've had a lot of good luck finding great new bands who never get widespread exposure-- but every so often even I'm surprised when I run across one THIS good!!!

If you like this, seek out their 2004 single, "Till You Come Back Home" / "The Boy Who Took My Place", on Screaming Apple Records (Germany; I found it in a store in Finland!). Both sides are deeply in Spencer Davis mode. A blast!

5 out of 5 stars garage rock masterpiece.......2004-03-30

I first heard The Chains on Little Steven Van Zandt's radio show "The Underground Garage", which i listen to religiously.(every sunday at 10 pm if your in the NY NJ area and get Q104.3)Little Steven gave the Chains a lot of airplay. He played nrvous breakdown mostly every week for months after the cd came out. Then i was looking through the used rack at the local record store and found the cd. i bought it right there on impulse, and i do not regret it. The whole cd is amazing. The harmonica parts ar great, and the guys voice is so cool. To me, it sounds a little like R&B tinged garage rock, and it works perfectly. This is one of those albums that you have to listen to all the way through, you can not just listen to a few songs here and there. There aren't many cds that i think are like that(pinkerton by weezer, and LA Woman by the doors, and Big Brother and the Holding Company's self titled debut being some of the few). So go to your local record store and buy this cd, and if they dont have it either order it through here, or through Gethip.com because they are on Get Hip records, run by The Cynics(another great garage rock band that you would definately like if you like the Chains).
