Album Description
From Rochester, NY, one of the later signings to legendary New York Doo-Wop label Jubilee Records. The Blades Of Grass were one of the prime east coast exponents (along with The Free Design) of that usually west coast genre of Sunshine Pop. It's complex, baroque harmonies & optimistic atmosphere having a much overlooked but firm second front in the city that never sleeps, indeed the group's first hit single 'Happy' went head to head in a chart battle with LA's Sunshine Company, as did their version of the Peter Sellers film title-track 'I Love You Alice B. Toklas' with Harpers Bizarre shortly afterwards (though The Blades' version with it's vocal phasing & psychy effect-laden intro & outro, somewhat had the edge stylistically) This release includes their only LP from 1967, together with all of their non-LP singles in the original Mono, making the first ever complete collection by these masters of Soft Pop. Customer Reviews:
A Bright Bit of Sixties Sunshine Pop.......2004-04-12
The songs on this CD, recorded circa 1967, are delightful. The harmonies are beautiful and the production is lush. There is a definite Beatles influence: the band members are Americans, but there is a pronounced British inflection in some of their vocalizations. The CD includes cover versions of songs by the Beatles ("Help!"), the Hollies ("Charlie and Fred") and the Left Banke ("Walk Away Renee"). The opening number, "Happy" ranks right up there with the best of the Association. "Pageant" reminds me a bit of the Moody Blues, and "Satin Slipper" is very reminiscent of the Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina". My favorite track is probably "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas", a frothy, Sgt. Peppery bit of psychedlic pop. Though highly derivative, this CD is a lot of fun. I consider it a real gem.
UNBELIEVABLE.......2003-03-29
This CD is AWESOME. everyone should get it. it's a lot of fun and you can listen to the whole thing without getting bored.
Smooth Blades.......2003-01-02
I was barely a teeny-bopper when I first heard "Happy" on WLCY 1380 (Tampa, FL). The instrumentation and harmonies on the Blades' songs made them quite listenable. As a young listener, I knew this was an album I needed to get. However, much to my chagrin, I never got around to buying it.
