A white sportscoat and a close crustacean.......2004-03-06
Before Britpop was homogenized by the puzzling success of Oasis it was represented proudly by bands like the Wonder Stuff, the Jazz Butcher, and the Close Lobsters. What they all had in common was a knack for combining an infectious melody with wicked wit - and you don't need me to tell you that it was the wit part of the equation that got jettisoned with the advent of the brothers Gallagher. The highlights here are the title track and "Just Too Bloody Stupid" (which really deserves to be a world anthem), but the entire disc offers many moments of sparkling pop and small wonder.
Paisley's finest ruffin's.......2003-06-23
In the mid-'80s, when Britain's underground music scene was dominated by jangly guitars, twee vocals, and fast rhythms, the Close Lobsters were there at the heart. The unusually named Foxheads Stalk This Land was not an album that suffered from over-production, however, this gives the songs a live, gritty feel. Influences stem, from the Smiths, Orange Juice and The Only Ones. Lyrically, the album does not bear close attention. Most songs comprise phrases which sound good when sung but not printed on a lyrics sheet - perhaps that's how pop music should be. There is rarely a substandard track to be heard on this fine album, with "I Kiss the Flower in Bloom" being the best 3 minute pop song never to be released as a single.Husker DU would be proud of the final track the epic 'Mother Of God'
The influence of murmur/reckoning era R.E.M. on the title track are obvious and there is also a rather huge nod to Camper Van Beethoven throughout the album.Better than Potato Head but only just.
jangle pop a la c86.......2003-06-21
this album was one of those that opened the door for me to stuff like stone roses, biff bang pow, the pale saints, etc... released back in 1987, i think it's their best (though the "what is there to smile about" EP IS great too), most accessible effort. it's all bitter cynicism on top of jangly pop guitars. (the lyrics sort of take themselves a bit too seriously, but whaddya want?)
if you're a fan of the smiths, soft boys, aztec camera, etc, you will love them. my favorite tracks (still feel as good today & they did then): "i kiss the flowers in bloom" & "in spite of these times." wonderful.

it's obvious these guys listened to a lot of smiths, soft boys, & the like so if you're a fan of the bitter cynicism on top of jangly guitars, you will love them. my favorite tracks (still feel as good today & they did then): "i kiss the flowers in bloom" & "in spite of these times."
better left forgotten.........2002-08-13
I've tried a few times now to find at least a few redeeming qualities in this album, and each time I come up with nothing. This is c86 guitar pop at its most generic. That the Go-Betweens and the Church were infinitely more imaginative than the Close Lobsters goes without saying. But this even pales when compared to lesser 80s guitar pop bands like Brilliant Corners and St. Christopher. Hell, even the Woodentops were more interesting than this.
The songs are pleasant, and they sometimes kick up some decent energy, but nothing sticks out. It's all exceedingly bland; from the fey vocals to the ringy, pleasant but trite major chords, to the flat production, there's just really nothing here that makes any kind of impression. The only guitar pop band more boring and characterless than this would have to be the Bluebells.
