Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Powdies rock!.......2005-04-10

From one of the few 'yanks' that review powderfinger albums - I must say that after praising their past works, I only have 'VERY good' (vs excellent/awesome) praise for this one. The powdies can rock, for sure, but a fair few of the songs just left me kind of wanting...and I really didn't want to *feel* this way, so I listened to this CD at least 20 times before writing this review, and I still feel the same. Even the somewhat rocky 'treat me like a dog' from Odyssey would be a welcome addition to this ordinary set from a band who I think is...well...one of the best in the WORLD.

So, why do I give it 4 stars? Well, because Powderfinger at (in my opinion) their not-so-best, is still GREAT. What a pain in the butt I can be! But hey, when Bernard and the boys get going, it is hard to resist. 'Beaches', 'On my Mind' and 'Rockin Rocks' are awesome (and what other band can use words like 'lexicon' and get away with it), and yes the CD 'flows' very well from song to song. Guess I was just looking for some more/better slower numbers akin to Odyssey 5 and Internationalist, but heck, these superstars have the all the right in the world to do up a rocker CD like this one, and the stakes were high being the biggest thing since Vegemite in Australia...

For some reason, the Powdies are simply ignored by US radio (except maybe in college), and it is a shame. I think because they are not 'flavor of the month' musically, the US record producers just chose to ignore. The Oils had their chance, but faded into oblivion in the US because all the CD's after 'Diesel and Dust' were just tooo 'Australian'. Not knockin the legends, but more or less trying to make a point about the US music market - if it ain't what they want, you are OUT (hey, ask Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel, one of my hero groups of Aussie rock). Powderfinger, as great as they are, just don't seem to 'fit' into what the music industry is here (CDs and radio). Beats the s*** out of me....

OFF my soapbox, this CD is a welcome to those who thought they got a bit too soft on their previous CD. There are really no duds on this, just a flow of steady high-quality rockers. There are some mellow moments (How far have we really come), but the majority are rockers. Those looking for a generous sprinkling of "My Happiness" - stay away. The other main criticisms seem to rotate around the lack of diversity on this CD, and I would have to agree...but lack of diversity does not make this no less than 4 stars in my book. Anything they do is gold in my book!!

5 out of 5 stars A gem.......2004-12-16

An absolutley cracking effort from Powderfinger.

It still surprises me that Jet, Franz Ferdinand and the Vines, as good as they are, have been propelled to superstardom and yet Powderfinger remain largely unknown. In my opinion Powderfinger are one of the world's finest rock bands; so - if you are looking for a bit of hidden secret and you like the abovementioned bands -then snap up this album.

What is their style? If you enjoy solid guitar based rock, where the instruments compliment the unique vocals of the lead man (rather then drown him out) - then you will love it. I would not describe their tracks as 'heavy' - although there are a number that are fast, aggressive and energetic (i.e. 'Baby I've Got You On My Mind') - there are also a few that are slower and more subtle (i.e. 'Sunsets'). But my favourtie would be 'Love Your Way' - great stuff.

I'd have to say that I agree with other reviews that state that this album does require you to listen to it a few times before you really get into it - but this has always been a strange quality of Powderfinger rather than a drawback. They seem to craft an entire album rather than develop a set of singles that get thrown together. There are some great bands out there whose songs have been catchy but for whatever reason their album does not end up in my regular playlist. This never seems to happen with Powderfinger.

As good as this albulm is, I believe their previous album Odyssey Number 5 is slightly superior. Both make my all time favourites list and I'd classify both as examples of that rare few that you can just put into your cd player, press play and listen from start to finish with no worries at all.

4 out of 5 stars Do Yourself A Favour.......2004-11-27

Another cracking album from one of Australia's finest bands.
They manage to seamlessly mix melody and rock to produce a great listen of concert choruses.
Top Tracks - Rockin' Rocks and How Far Have We Really Come
The Singles - On My Mind, Love Your Way, Sunsets and Stumbling are all deserving of a seperate release.

Do Yourself A Favour!

4 out of 5 stars Take a trip down Vulture St.......2004-11-17

Definitely Powderfinger's most satisfying album to date. Best songs are Sunsets and Love your way. This band is huge in Australia and deservedly so. I'm an Aussie and this is about the only Aussie group I've ever liked. 10 times better than Jet. Strong melodies, catchy, anthemic, classy rock. Bernard Fanning is a charismatic vocalist and this band is great live.

4 out of 5 stars Great Aussie Rock........2004-08-16

I wouldn't give anything a perfect score, but if I could I'd give it 4.5 stars. It's an album I feel really grows on you after a few listens, particularly the singles.

Compared to Odyssey Number Five, it adheres more to Powder's rock leanings of past, but don't expect to hear a completely different band -- just good ol' rock tunes. From interviews, that's pretty much what they were aiming for, and how the title came about.
