Compelling rhythms, melodic rock, and intense vocals make for a vibrant and dynamic combination on Headstrong's strong and varied debut. Some tunes are in line with what Incubus and Tantric are up to, but this Canadian foursome (formerly known as Bomb 32) possess layers of melody combined and a socio-political perspective that should grab fans of Rage Against the Machine and other lovers of heady heaviness. Rap-leaning vocalist Matt Kinna changes it up as the band kicks into aggro overdrive. The entreaty "Do What You Feel Like" boasts complex, punk-like aggression that contrasts with moodier moments such as "I Am for Real." The combination of intense, rap- and metal-fueled energy and supple, sonorous sounds makes the dozen compelling offerings here at once timely and timeless. --Katherine Turman
Customer Reviews:
It's a damn shame..........2004-03-10
You know: with wiltering rap-rock whatever the hell you want to call it bands this one was actually unique and had the ability to keep ground. It had all the proper ingredients for success; great ingenuetive, socio-political lyrcis, some kick ass jams and a badass singer. With the passion of Rage Against the Machine the intensity of Snot and sarcasm of Faith no More this band surprised the hell out of me. I usually HATE "nu-metal" acts, but this cd is great from start to finish and is a euphoric listen in a way. Well, the time has come and after one release this band is gone. This cd will be in my collection forever but it makes one wonder what this band would have accomplished had they continued. They come from an increasing scene right now: CANADA! Of all places; the North has nurtured 36crazyfists, Boysnightout and Grade and now this lovely band. I never got the pleasure to see them which is a major let-down considering that this band is probably the best band at what it does right now (or back then.). All the songs could be singles, even if this scene is dying this band was tight and though you may not know anything past the crappy song "Headstrong" this band should not go unnoticed; they deserve some respect for their short-lived career. Of course it will be that the members of this band will most likely continue in musical ways but this band is truly unique and THIS band will most likely never be again. RIP.
A breath of fresh air!.......2004-02-29
Finally something new for the alt rock/ nu metal scene! So hard to describe, the singers are sort of like RATM but not half as annoying and Chevelle but better, the guitar is awesome
a but like RATM but better, and stranger, they are very different some songs are heavy and then go to a echoy creepy almost tropical sound...its strange but cool
1. All Of The Above - 4/5 pretty good, not a huge stand out
2. Backlash - 5/5 cool chorus, nice raping, its good
3. Inside Joke - 4.5/5 very heavy, but the bridge is a sort of slow, break hard to describe
4. Swing Harder - 3.5/5 a weird song, not my favorite but its heavy and quite
5. Build - just a short building block thing to Adriana
6. Adriana - 6/5 i agree this is a 'misleading' single but i must say its a great song, not so heavy but awesome
7. Do What You Feel Like - 4/5 short fast paced song, good guitar and cool singing
8. I Am For Real - 4.5/5 weird song, the versus are heavy and i dont like them much, the chorus is cool, weird, and the bridge is echoy trippy and creepy
9. Get In - 4/5 this song is okay, heavy
10. Hoodies & Hoods 5/5 cool song, has some sort of spy quality to it, or something
11. State - 4/5 sorta reminds me of RATM but better, less annoying :)
12. Open Season 3.5/5 another RATMish song, probably my least favorite
all and all pretty awesome CD, different and cool, if you like this band check out Reville, they are the sortof rap/metal good stuff, but sadly they broke up
Don't Let The Radio Be Your Guide.......2003-12-30
I never cared a whole lot for 'Adriana', which seems to be the tune all others are being judged by. Don't be fooled!
HEADSTRONG is raw and heavy. The best tunes on this cd are 'I Am For Real', 'Inside Joke', 'All Of The Above' and 'Get In'...all of these are ass-kickers and what this band is all about.
I say buy this cd and enjoy it, because the record companies will get their hands in on the next cd and bring this band down with a bunch of mellow "hits" and commercialized crap just like they've done with Saliva and every other new band.
Great album..........2003-05-06
I would have given this album 5 stars but it would have to be completely perfect.
The single Adrianna is nothing like the rest of the album. The opening song is probably the best song on the album...but overall there are no "fillers" on the album. All in all it's a strong album and I'd recommend it to just about anyone who likes rap\metal with heart and intelligence.
I out it in my car stereo 6 weeks ago and I haven't taken it out...which is saying a lot!!!
