Album Description

Damon Che is an octopus at the drums for Don Cabellero, but he also plays guitar in an equally outrageous fashion. If you're the sort who can appreciate both Sonic Youth and Van Halen, perhaps you're terrestrially challenged as well.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Different... But that's a very good thing........2002-11-26

Picked this up after listening to Amazon's sound bites (Kudos to Amazon for providing sound clips of most artist's albums!). "Different," in that not every song structure is locked in to the formulaic "verse, verse, chorus (or solo) and verse." I'm a guitar person and the guitar grabbed me right off. Crunchy, melodic, sometimes dissonant, but always appropriate for the particular song. And, in my opinion, a very adventurous and original batch of music. Probably got pigeon-holed as "grunge," which, by the way I'm a fan of and believe it still doesn't get the respect it deserves. Sadly, as with many other talented musicians in the music genre, overexposure and record company exec greed decided what America needed "next" was the pop-stylings of Ms. Spears, N'Stink, etc. Sad. Best Song: Guitar Strings for a Holocaust.

4 out of 5 stars Damon Che turns in bewildering, trenchant guitar performance.......1999-08-27

On what I understand to be their second album together, Damon "Che" Fitzgerald (trapsman for Don Caballero, on guitar and vocals here), Karl Hendricks (bass, of the self-named Trio) and the fellow who drums for Hurl, throw themselves into highly-torqued metallic numbers redolant, in a colossally distorted punk way, of Diver Down-era Van Halen. The Eddie-worship comes off as sincere, but also knowing, and is offered with a good dash of humour.

It impresses that Damon, one of THE rock drummers now, has found the spare time to pick up such considerable feel and chops on guitar as well. In fact, by focusing on getting a warm and well-textured tone, and on melodic progression rather than on finger-tapped note density and other GIT skills, he is much closer to the heart of EVH's expressive style than the countless, more technically fussy axemen who might come to mind.

Ideally, the vocals would have been dropped, and the guys would have let the monster truck sound and instrumental prowess speak for itself, as it does on Don Caballero's albums, but this is really too intriguing a document to pass up if you like both Don Cab and Van Halen. (Or Rush, actually; I could see these lads really kicking ass covering anything from "Hemispheres")
