3 out of 5 stars Junkmedia.org Review - Doesn't quite hold together.......2003-03-24

One of the last bands in the world that I'd expect to get "updated" with a modern electronic veneer are pastoral quiet-rockers American Analog Set. Their recent LP, Know By Heart, was easily one of the best records of 2001. It is 40 minutes of pop that gets by on simple hooks, good looks and, in the age of those blokes The Strokes, no pretense. With a record this good, the thinking must go, why not milk it a bit farther with some imaginative reworkings? Right! Look out shy indie rockers, 'cause here come the glitchy remixes!

Although everyone and their mother have been remixed at this point (see: "Star Spangled Banner," Big Beat Remix), there's still something fresh about Updates. Perhaps it's the hinted-at notion that the remixing here goes both ways: not only does Her Space Holiday remix two songs from Know By Heart, but American Analog Set reinterpret "These Days," a Her Space Holiday song.

These floating transitions from band-to-computer and computer-to-band are where Updates transcends the aforementioned Big Beat Remix-itis and heads into uncharted territory. For their part, American Analog Set make Her Space Holiday sound remarkably like a Know By Heart outtake, turning "These Days" into another beautiful three-minute pop song.

For his turn, Her Space Holidays reimagines the turned-down rock of "Aaron and Maria" as a canvas for stacked jazz harmonies and unexpected electro-squeals. Morr Music's Styrofoam lends a deft European touch to "The Postman," leaving the verse/chorus structure intact while slowly adding layer after layer of softly buzzing synthesizer to the songs slow build about a down-on-his-luck mail carrier.

Despite these high points, the EP's six songs don't really hold together; the opening instrumental "Desert Eagle (All I Want for Christmas)," previously only available on 7", is nice enough, but probably should have stayed in Limited-edition Land. Similarly, Her Space Holiday's remix of "Know by Heart" sounds only one step above Fatboy Slim-esque frat-hop.

The ideas that Updates hints at, however, are far more noble than its filler tracks suggest. The notion of a band reversing the trend of electronic groups remixing rock songs is one to keep in mind. How could a traditional band cover Matmos (or Marumari, or Autechre) and get away with something useful? The options seem endless-and endlessly difficult. So, whose ready to take on that "Boards of Canada - indie rock remix"? Mssrs. Analog Set, I'm looking in your direction.

5 out of 5 stars More electronic sounding AmAnSet is great!.......2002-08-28

This album is a great release for AmAnSet. It more electronic than previous releases but it really works well for them. The tunes on "know by heart" easily blend into the electronic sound. her space holiday and AmAnSet were meant to work together. The two unreleased gems make this album really worth buying. "These Days" is a cover of a her space holiday song from "manic expressive" and desert eagle is from an old 7". Get this album if you love amanset and if your tastes include electronic sounds.

4 out of 5 stars More.......2002-07-17

I'm pretty new to Am.AnSet, I got a listen to Know by Heart and now I'm really diggin Updates. Yeah its an EP of mostly remixes though 2 tracks are new.
The first new track is a cover of Her Space Holiday's These Days, its a pretty good song with a sort of pop feel. The 2nd is called Desert Eagle (all I want for christmas mix) kicks... Its a redone AmAnSet but is very distinct in a kick... way. Her SpaceHoliday drops in 2 remixes of AmAnSet songs - Aaron and Maria and Know by heart. They are very good efforts, with a combination of HipHop beats. By the way, Her Space also did some remixes for REM.
