Customer Reviews:
Some good pummelling sounds to match poem about violence.......2005-11-13
Some Lydia Lunch albums come across as an excuse for the album design. They were on the cutting edge when they were released. The lettering by Robert Williams, an art porn cinema aesthetic, and the blockbusting schlockiness of it all. And it was meant to look lurid and disturbed at the same time.
Stinkfist is a whole lotta drumming and chanting - ( chanting something sexy, of course). It's absolutely screaming at you to look, look at me - you vouyeur." at the same time trying to scare you with its intensity.
Meltdown Oratorio is a storybook for grown ups - more like one of Duke Ellington's kookier moments ( A Drum is A Woman ). It's about the decay of modern times, the environmental catastrophe of a mind swamped with t.v. news horror. It articulates a vision which is similar to a later film called Natural Born Killers.
The Crumb is a playful beatnik romp between Lunch and Thurston Moore. They sound like theyre on acid in an out of control elevator - but they haven't realised yet !
This c.d. sits on the line between unlistenable tinkering and highly sophisticated conceptual art. Probably not the best L.L. ( due to exceptionally good work earlier on ), but still a good virile antidote to Eminem.
Also look up Foetus, Cop Shoot Cop, Wiseblood, Steroid Maximus, Mars, James Chance, Swans, Return of the Living Dead and No Trend.
postcard from the sonic fringes.......2003-11-11
i dig lydia for the same reason i got into avant garde jazz:
exhilarating, adventurous, and decidedly UNcommercial sounds...
a musical enema for formulaic constipation.
i just wish in general that she'd do more collaborating with her fringe musician pals and less speaking engagements.
in this instance we have a collaborative effort with jim 'foetus' thirlwell (aka clint ruin) and old buddy thurston moore. that makes me happy :)
this was the 3rd thing by lydia that i picked up (the first 2 being '13:13' and 'honeymoon in red') and it is definitely the most out-there! the highlight is prob. 'stinkfist' - which you can also find on a few goth compilations.
sure is expensive for an ep! if you're investigating lydia, try 'honeymoon in red' or 'queen of siam' or 'shotgun wedding' first.
