Album Description
19 cover songs spanning Mr. Bowie's career from "Space Oddity" to "Heathen," performed by such diverse acts as Tegan and Sara, The Switchblade Kittens, Shesus, Astrid Young (of Neil Young's band), and Essra Mohawk, whose 1970 release "Primordial Lovers" was cited in a 1977 Rolling Stone review as one of the "25 all-time best albums." The compilation also features the band Lunasect, whose contribution to the "Anyone Can Play Radiohead" tribute CD was singled out in another Rolling Stone review (July 11, 2001) out as the only "track which shows a glimpse of the promise this album might have had." The CD's cover art features a classic 1972 photo of David Bowie from legendary rock photographer Mick Rock.
Customer Reviews:
Recommendable.......2006-01-04
Fine David Bowie tribute album. Well known David Bowie songs recorded by excellent bands, with female vocals. Most I like "Space Oddity" by Pitch Black Dream, "Kooks" by Andrea Perry, "Watch That Man" by The Fur Ones, "Rebel Rebel" by Tegan + Sara (featuring Grace Nocturnal) and "Modern Love" by Astrid Young.
Eclectic mix of styles add up to great tribute CD.......2004-03-10
Some radical and unexpected renditions of Bowie's tunes here, both his hits and some later, more obscure compositions. Wide range of styles from folk to punk but everything works. Every cover on this cd sounds fresh like it was written today. Just goes to show what a talent Bowie was and is and how talented these chicks covering him are.
