5 out of 5 stars "Timeless", yes, that describes it best........2003-02-28

"Oh, you gotta try this one." My brother handed me a disc that read "The Autumn Defense". "You like Wilco, right?" he asked.
"Oh yeah, but I gotta tell you, El, I think Summerteeth blows Yankee Foxtrot away. I don't really care for it all that much and have no idea why it is being put on the top of all of the 'Best Of...' lists."
"I know..." my brother agreed. "Well, this is more like Summerteeth..."
The Autumn Defense's 'Green Hour' has been in heavy rotation in both my house and car ever since. It is simply wonderful. I agreed with my brother's comparison at first, but after only a few listens, was struck by the little nuances that make this album so remarkable. At times it is more like Matthew Sweet doing country. Other times it's like Brian Wilson after stumbling upon the fountain of youth. All the time, however, it is comforting, engaging and completely enjoyable. It is not unlike anything that you have heard before, but that is part of its charm. It does not insult you by trying to be quirky or odd just for the sake of being odd or quikry. It is timeless music that, without taking aim at anything in particular, finds it's mark dead on.
"Here, you gotta try this..." I leaned over to my roommate and handed him a copy of 'The Green Hour' by The Autumn Defense. "It is one of the most enjoyable albums I have heard in a long time."

4 out of 5 stars Left me wanting..........2002-05-13

There are some wonderful moments on this cd when the music and lyrics spark, like flashes of lightning in a cold night's storm. I find myself listening to the music, waiting for the brilliant flashes. This music is good, but not great. It leaves me wanting something more and sends me searching through stacks of cd's for Summerteeth, or maybe something by the Sundays.

5 out of 5 stars Classic debut from Wilco's John Stirratt.......2001-05-30

John Stirratt (with the help of New Orleans' pal; Pat Sansone) has fashioned an unbelievable record set in the slipstream where all classic pop albums live.

Translation: this record sounds like it could've been created anywhere from 1965 to 2001. Timelessness is not an easy feat my friends and must be celebrated when (all-too-rarely) encountered.

The record also includes contributions from Woody Guthrie (lyrics from the Guthrie archives - music by Stirratt), Ken Coomer (Wilco), Will Kimbrough (from Nashville legends; Will & the Bushmen) and Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum) on trumpet !?!

It's so hard to pick a defining moment as the music is diverse enough to hold your attention, yet always presents a cohesive group sound. However, the Nick Lowe/Brian Wilson-collaboration-that-never-was; Full 5 Paces, might be my favorite. Led by a wonderfully strident acoustic guitar with touches of marimba and brass the song breaks out of the gate and holds you by the scruff of the neck until the final chords some 3 minutes later. Just like all great pop music.
