Next to the Beatles, any band would pale in comparison, but the Hollies put out single after single of great pop music in the mid-'60s. Gorgeous harmonies, killer material, whether self-penned or from outside, and just different enough ("Stop! Stop! Stop!" for example) to command attention without being novelties. The later material, like "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" was maudlin, but at their peak, on "Bus Stop," "Look Through Any Window," and most of the songs here, they could stand up against anybody--even the Fabs. And that's a recommendation, unreserved and enduring. --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Enough.......2004-10-03

It is a good colection of Hollies music. It has "Bus Stop" and "Carrie Anne" but the song it's really missing is "Listen to me"

4 out of 5 stars A good compilation.......2003-11-07

Before Graham Nash joined the supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, he was a part of a lesser-known group called The Hollies. In the sixties, these guys played the typical rock music of the days - and did a damn good job of it. Unfortunately, Nash had little creative control, and eventually left the band so that he would have more creative control elsewhere (one of the main reasons he left is because they refused to record his Marrakesh Express, which became one of the biggest hits on the first Crosby, Stills, and Nash album.) Even so, during his days with the band, they recorded some damn good tunes. Read on for my review of The Hollies - All Time Greatest Hits.

PROS:
-If you're one of those people who wants to hear what Graham Nash sounded like before becoming a part of CSNY, this compilation is for you. All of the band's biggest hits, such as Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress), He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother, Bus Stop, Carousel, and Carrie Anne are all here for your listening pleasure.
-You also get a number of underrated masterpieces.
-This is an affordable compilation.
-A number of stores carry this compilation, so you shouldn't have to look too hard for it.

CONS:
-The major complaint I have about this compilation is one I make about A LOT of them - It doesn't even come close to filling the eighty minutes you can fit on a compact disc. Why? They had plenty of other excellent tunes they could have filled the time with.

OVERALL:
To put it simply, this is a compilation that casual Hollies or Graham Nash fans will love. Sure, it's not the best Hollies hits compilation out there, but it's still an excellent one. If you like sixties rock, The Hollies are worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars not the most complete anthology.......2000-12-28

I've always loved the Hollies, but if you want a more complete sample of their oeuvre (including several major British hits that were not released in the U.S.), try the "20 Golden Greats" cd.
