Customer Reviews:
Pretty good.......2003-08-24
This is not as good as their first album (Music for Pleasure)--which I thought was fantastic. But, it is definitely worth listening to-especially if you love New Order. However, it sounds a bit like a "B-Side" of Music for Pleasure.
It's OK.......2003-03-30
I was hoping this CD would be as incredible as their first album, "Music for pleasure". Unfortunately, they apparently completely changed their style. It's an ok CD, but their first is so much more impressive.
Some high points.......2002-03-19
Monaco's first album "Music for Pleasure" is a very good collection indeed. This self-titled followup is worth listening to. However, the quality is - to this listener's ear - patchier than on "Music for Pleasure".
Monaco deserve credit for again attempting different styles - mainly guitar-based, not unlike New Order, but sometimes incorporating drum machine beats, sometimes not; sometimes up-tempo, sometimes reflective; sometimes cynical, sometimes sentimental.
The opening track, "I've got a Feeling" is very strong, as are "Kashmere" and the wistful "Ballroom". But those are the only tracks which would deserve to be on a compilation of Monaco's first two albums. If you like this CD, then purchasing "Music for Pleasure" will be a particular joy for you.
I am tempted to say something about "Real Wild Grown-ups" which I briefly mentioned when reviewing Electronic's third album "Twisted Tenderness". This would perhaps be a little harsh, as tired lyrics do not preponderate However, inspiration does not always seem to be present in large quantities (for example "A Life Apart" does seem to drone on endlessly), despite the clean-lined design on the album's cover.
A great sophomore album for Monaco.......2001-08-20
The short -- it's a great album. If you like New Order and it's associated spin-off groups, chances are, you'll like this one also. The long -- what follows is my track-by-track review... Monaco opens up their self-titled album with a first track very reminiscent of Electronic's "Raise the Pressure" album. Echos of New Order's "age of consent" can be heard here. It's a good album opener -- fast moving. The second track -- "A Life Apart" -- makes me think Ocean Blue or The Lightning Seeds (I like both). It's mellow...orbital. "Kashmere" is my favorite track on this CD -- it is a lot like "Temptation" and is a good song to play for your girl (or guy?). "Berts Theme" is a Beatles-esque tune in an Austin Powers sort of way. Very flower child with many funky 70s sound effects (you'll know what I mean when you hear 'em). "Ballroom" sounds like any random slow Oasis tune (expected given the influence of that band on lead singer Potts). "See-Saw" is the requisite disco tune for the album. First and best candidate for a remixed single with club edits. I think "Black Rain" best defines the "Monaco sound". Sounds a lot like the first song from the "Music for the People" album and also sounds like Monaco-predecessor-and-also-New-order-spinoff "Revenge". Lot's of driving lead bass and Hook vocals. An okay tune. Sounds a bit like INXS, no? That is not a compliment. The background choral singers (synthesizer-generated?) doesn't help. Flexing some rhythmic talent, "End of the World" is done in 6/8 time -- the stuff ballads are made of. Challenging to pull off successfully so I'll give them bonus points for effort. A nifty track that is both brooding and upbeat. Those choral singers from "It's a Boy" reappear here. Finally, "Marine" wraps things up with a nice, dreamy, lullaby-like melody that morphs into a funky new age run that morphs into techno and back again.
