2 out of 5 stars CAVEAT: THIS IS A STEREO-ONLY, NON-HYBRID SACD.......2006-04-06

What a disappointment - I should have done my homework more thoroughly. After enjoying the superb 5.1 remix of "Toto IV" (Amazon.com ASIN B000066SJZ), I looked forward to hearing "Hydra" presented in similarly lush soundscape. Unfortunately, this disc is one of Sony's early release stereo-only SACDs that fail to take advantage of the multi-channel opportunity the format offers.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy this music - slick production and tight, virtually flawless studio performances - and the DSD remastering excels in presenting the stereo mix at its best. In 2006, however, I cannot forgive continuing to distribute and sell a stereo-only non-hybrid (i.e. cannot be played in your regular CD player) SACD without an appropriately visible disclaimer to that effect.

Yes, the stereo-only datum is in the fine print. And that's the point.

To summarize: excellent stereo-only production values for some of the most finely crafted studio pop in the past three decades, but I recommend passing on this moderately expensive disc unless and until re-released with a multi-channel remaster.

5 out of 5 stars Hydra is Toto's Best!.......2002-02-17

Although this is their second album (released in the late 70's), it is still possibly the most satisfying album Toto has ever recorded. It kicks off with the anthemic title track "Hydra" and never lets up. If you've heard "White Sister" on their live album "Livefields" you know that song is still as potent a rocker as it ever was. All of Toto's music is well-written, well-produced rock at it's finest by some of the greatest musicians ever born, but "Hydra" is a step above anything they've ever done. I wore out two albums and then bought the CD. It's been a staple in my collection since it came out and has remained in my top ten favorite all time recordings list since then. Do yourself a favor and get this rock classic.
