Album Description
The 2000 debut of Barbara Manning's new millennium power trio, the Go Luckys, comes off very much like the strained recollection of several hard years (and a career of commercial failures) that it is. New collaborators Fabrizio and Flavio Steinbach bring enthusiasm to this six-song EP that adds an ironic edge to Manning's pensive indie rock rather than transforming it. A typically strong offering from one of indie rock's overlooked champions. Innerstate Records.
Customer Reviews:
Charming, in a low rent kind of way.......2000-09-07
Barbara Manning is a talented and intensely personal songwriter who has toiled in indie obscurity for well over a decade. She's part of the San Francisco music scene that has spawned such acts as the Cat Heads and the Donner Party. Like those long defunct bands, she's revered by the college radio crowd but has failed to make any impact on the charts. And like some of those musicians (I met and interviewed the Cat Heads, and I remember their bile), she is somewhat bitter about that. Barbara has always sounded slightly off kilter, like the soprano in the choir whose voice can't quite hit that high register or the guitarist who can't quite manage to tune their guitar properly. Her dusky voice blends well with her homespun confections and you could easily slot her in with such acts as Yo La Tengo. Unfortunately, she lacks YLT's supporting players. A troubadour is all well and good, but not when she mates her rather thin voice with workmanlike guitar playing and recordings that sound like she recorded them at the bottom of a well. So, this listener would love to see her join forces with an instrumentally versatile band and an ace producer.
I give this four stars for the reasons mentioned above, and also because this EP is overpriced. Skip this one and pick up One Perfect Green Blanket instead.
Not enough bang for the buck.......2000-05-26
