Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Far better than Rock n Soul Vol I.......2005-11-17

This was the most comprehensive Hall & Oates collection available when I bought this. An absolute must have collection for any Hall & Oates fan but doesn't feel like buying all the albums. Contains all the big hits: Rich girl, Sara Smile, Kiss on My List, Maneater, Mano a Mano, and one of my favorites Family Man & Private Eyes. For any big late 80's-early 90's SNL fans G.E. Smith and Tom "T-Bone" Wolk were part of Hall & Oates backing band.

4 out of 5 stars Their complete spectrum of hits.......2004-05-30

This group went through the same grooves as the police with its multitude of albums and compilations. Only over the last few years, Hall and Oats have released a complete collection of all their Hits. I used to own rock and soul volume one, waiting for that anticipated volume two. And for some strange reason, the rock and soul compilation sounded slightly hollow.

Starting all over again sounds great! It contains the full spectrum of hits such as "she's gone", "rich girl", "kiss on my list", "you make my dreams", "private eyes", "I can't go for that", "man eater", "one and one" (what a gem), "family man", "say it isn't so", "adult education", "out of touch", "method of modern love", "dreamtime" and their last hit from 1988, "everything your heart desires". There is a few less known hits, such as the original version of "every time you go away", "Sara's smile" and there cover of "you've lost that loving feeling".

The only thing that really irritates me about this release is that horrid version of "out of touch". This was my favourite Hall and Oates song. Just can't stand that wacky intro, hense the four star rating. When will BMG release a compilation with the original seven inch version?

This review is based on the two CD set released in Australia.

4 out of 5 stars Not Everything MY Heart Desires.......2004-04-17

I felt that with every previous review stating that this is "everything you could want from Daryl Hall & John Oates", someone should point out the major omissions here. And I figured that that someone may as well be me.

Simply stated, the Top 20 hit "Wait For Me" has been omitted. On a collection with 36 tracks, which includes far less successful singles and a plethora of album tracks, there's simply NO excuse for leaving off such a major hit! It reeks of the "let's randomly leave off a major hit or two" strategy used by record labels (most notoriously Capitol, but by no means confined to them) on hits collections since the advent of CDs. How many additional CDs have YOU bought by the same artist just to get songs that were left off earlier CDs?

Now I should state my bias - "Wait For Me" happens to be my favorite single by Daryl Hall & John Oates (who are more popularly known as Hall & Oates, although they have NEVER recorded under that name). It's just a catchy little song with a kind of wistful sadness that really grabs me - and that electric guitar/piano intro just soars straight up to the stars!

But "Wait For Me" is by no means the only omission here. "Your Imagination", one of the duo's most cutting edge singles - and a Top 40 hit - has also been left off. And - can you say "How Does It Feel To Be Back"? Can you sing it? I'm sure you can, but what you can't do is find it on this 2-CD set.

So let me be the one voice in the wilderness to counter these other reviewers (including a Top 50 Reviewer!) that are telling you that this collection has everything you could want by Daryl Hall & John Oates.

With that said, this is still a pretty cool - and eclectic - collection. The inclusion of the album track "Kerry" (it just may have been a single, too, but if so it didn't chart) from their fantastic "Bigger Than the Both of Us" album is a definite plus in favor of buying this collection. The song is one of Daryl Hall's most memorable and enduring compositions. Another nice touch is the inclusion of "Dreamtime", a Daryl Hall solo hit. The rest of the album tracks scattered through this collection make up a wide range of styles, and do tend to represent some of the pair's best work OFF the singles charts.

Of course all the monster 80's hits are here, as well as the classic "She's Gone" from their early years on Atlantic, and the last couple hits from the 90's on Arista.

Just be aware that this collection now has a domestic counterpart (as of Spring of 2004): the 2-disc "Ultimate Daryl Hall & John Oates". Now that collection actually DOES have every Top 40 hit the duo had, plus: some singles that weren't as big; their most recent material for independent labels, including the hit "Do It For Love"; and a few choice album cuts, including two from their classic "Abandoned Luncheonette" album on Atlantic. I'd recommend that over this by far, although... darn it, you really ought to hear "Kerry" if you haven't heard it!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the import price!.......2002-09-22

You must buy this cd--it's the most comprehensive collection of ALL of their hits that has been released to date. I love it!
