He didn't go so far as to call it Silk Degrees II, but Dig is as close as Boz Scaggs is likely to come to recording the sequel to his most commercially successful and, for many, best-loved record (unless you count 1977's underrated follow-up, Down Two Then Left). Reunited after all these years with Silk Degrees collaborator David Paich, Scaggs makes a successful return to the blue-eyed soul of his late-'70s works on tracks such as "Desire" and "Thanks to You," the latter featuring tastefully muted trumpet work from Roy Hargrove. Elsewhere, a tuneful "Call That Love" bounces along over a "Lowrider"-style groove, while "Get on the Natch" and "You're Not" are apparent attempts by Scaggs and Danny Kortchmar (who coproduced with Paich) to fuse blues and hip-hop. There's even something for fans of Paich's old band, Toto, whose pristine pop stylings circa "Africa" are echoed on "Vanishing Point," arguably one of this album's best cuts. True, nothing here may be quite as poppy as "Georgia" or as pretty as "Harbor Lights," but Scaggs deserves credit for trying to evoke the spirit of Silk Degrees without merely pandering to his past. --Bill Forman

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Boz doesn't Dig far enough . . ........2005-04-30

Just purchased this and after repeated listenings I'm afraid to say I'm rather disappointed. The largely programmed percussion becomes genuinely ponderous by the end of the CD and, for me at least, serves to underscore the overly-muted musicianship of DIG. Mr. Scaggs has a long resume to prove he is capable of so much more. The CD is not a total loss however. The cuts are beautifully sung and it is clear that Boz has lost nothing as a vocalist. Vanishing Act is the pick of the litter.

5 out of 5 stars vanishing point.......2001-10-03

Glad that Boz is back since his last release "Come on home" in 1997. Dig isn't only a great album with superior musicianship
including TOTO members David Paich and Steve Lukather, who joined him through his Platin aera between 1976 and 1981, it's one of his best CD's for a long time. Favorite tracks: Vanishing point, Payday, Miss Riddle, Call that love and Thanks to you. Play it loud !

5 out of 5 stars Boz At His Best.......2001-09-21

I love Boz Scaggs. I saw him in concert in Clearwater, FL two years ago. It was one of the best concert's I've seen, and I've seen quite a few. Dig is authentic Boz. Dig may be one of Boz's best. It reflects a maturity and honing of his craft that is very rewarding. The only problem I have with Boz is that we don't see enough of him.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Riddle.......2001-09-20

This is one of those songs that when you first hear it, stays with you for a long time.....first heard and knew I had to have the album.

Of the 11 tracks, 5 are winners....check our "Get on the Natch", different for Boz, but will wake you up in the morning!

Highly recommend this CD.
