5 out of 5 stars I finally owned one!.......2002-01-31

There's no doubt this guys had a Teenage Fan Club influence. But I still think they had more Raw Grinding Sound which separates them from the legend TFC. I have mp3's of this CD and listen to it a thousand times. But it's just so good that I have to buy me the original CD and buy the other 2 albums too. I really wish they have TAB sites for their songs. If you're a powerpop fan, buy this CD!!!

3 out of 5 stars Catchy pop, but not a very original sound.......2001-11-16

If I were at a club or in a record store and this was playing on the sound system, I would have said with 100% certainty that it was the Scottish pop band Teenage Fanclub. It sounds SOOO much like them, but no, it's North Carolina's Mayflies USA! The soundalike factor sort of distracts me from judging the album on its own merits, but I like Teenage Fanclub, and there are plenty worse bands to emulate. This CD, produced by the legendary Chris Stamey, is not groundbreaking, but it is pretty good. "Sodium Pentothal" has a big, majestic sound, and tracks like "The Last Time" and "The End of the Line" are hook-filled, jangly three-minute pop songs that have sort of a timeless quality about them, like they could have been released anytime in the last 30 years. Mayflies USA obviously have the songwriting chops; now let's hope that they develop a more original sound.

4 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable listen.......2001-09-27

Usually when you see a name like The Mayflies USA, you assume that there was already another band called The Mayflies somewhere in the world. You know, like The English Beat or The London Suede. Nope. They just liked having the USA on the end. Understandably so, because this is distinctly American music. Two guitars, bass, and drums played with a loose, garage-band attitude make up the bulk of The Mayflies USA sound. There is a great sense of spontanaity on the album, as though someone turned on the recorder, yelled "GO!", and the band just played for 45 minutes. Solid hooks, great melodies, and a really good "feel" mark this as a cut above your basic guitar rock album. Nothing ground breaking or outstanding, but a very enjoyable listen that stands up to repeated plays without getting old.
