The Volume Drops and Rises to Beautiful Levels.......2001-03-25
Old time Kalamazoo, Michigan rockers reunite new and old members and transcend signiture sounds into amazing new soundscapes...and get ready because this effort soars with incredible pop sensibility that will floor you upon each listen. This album delivers with drop-dead intensity what has been missing from pop/rock today. Sleet's, Volume Drops is not to be missed! Past efforts from former twitch members always represented innovation and prolific songwriting and their new debut takes those qualities and magnifies them with incredible detail and thought. Influences from Jeff Buckley, Peter Gabriel, The Smiths, Prince, The London Suede, Guided By Voices, and 70's soft rock are all a genius point of reference for this songwriter; a fascinating collage of sound. Soaring guitar anthems and stunnningly soulful lyrics power this recording. The new California sound is apparent in Fake Blue eyes, a ridiculously catchy pop gem. When She Fades Away appears to be the sole narrative of the album, Buckleyesque and with great power. A Little Anger takes notice with the gorgeous melancholy of Guided By Voices and classic Bryer's melody and delivery, sing-songy and plush. Gone to the Sea is the most gentle comment on personal and creative ephinany. Lyrics from this song appear predominantly within the cover art, perhaps the most profound of all written in this effort. Wicked Ways is a hopeful guitar driven song, short and effective. Starstruck is up there with Little Anger and could possibly be the most amazing contribution of them all. It's so hard to really pick any one song since they all differ and matter individually. There is definatley no "filler" on this album. Starstruck is probably absolutely breathtaking live. Elevado strikes as the saddest of them all and it is delivered in the 70's soft hit style of composition. Great chorus, dramatic in nature: "Don't need anything from you except goodbye...". A fragile ballad overflowing with wandering imagery and ghostly pauses, a real heartbreaker. Catch Your Death is so full and rocks with way clever lyrics. All the Love in the World is by far the anthem of the album. Could easily be the theme song from a kickass indie flick. I was beside myself while experiencing the incredible and careful crescendo of this one. And the glorious closer, You'll Never Know is a dream as far as love songs go. "Baby if you were music you'd be a radio song sent to the stars and the telephone wires and everyone would sing along". It takes a lot of bravery to write a good lovesong and a lot of truth and this one is particularly simple and lovely. These opinions are presented passionately though effortlessly since this music provokes so many satisfying reactions. This is a band that should not be overlooked or brushed away...a lot of popular music today lacks dimension and focus, innovation, thoughtfulness and most importantly, staying power. Sleet has shown themselves brightly through all of the mediocrity and fluff. I commend you on your intergrity and true, astounding, creative efforts. Keep pushing forward, it's just a matter of time...
giddy with love now more than ever.......2000-10-18
Kalamazoo's one-time potential Tool labelmates move into their 30's with emotive retro melodic rock which grows beyond the angered low-end rhythmic dischord of twitch and nods to assorted reference points in alt-pop rock in the past 20 years. Chris's vocals are melodic and confident and CLEAR. On first listen, this struck me as more of a midwestern Smiths. Best listened to right after the first EP since the disc is only 34:34 in length.
