On <I>Record in Red</I>, Marmoset distill psych-pop to its essence. This fine Hoosier outfit doesn't mess around; only one track on this super pleasurable disc goes over the three-minute mark. The spooky, bent vibe of Syd Barrett's work is obviously a big influence, especially on tracks like "Eyes Are Looking," "Winter," and "Art-Maker." "Lost Days for Ways" is a tight, tense rocker that recalls those masters of brevity, Wire. Marmoset are one of those American bands that sometimes sing with a British accent. Here it's not annoying; it just sounds like all-American fun. Besides writing incredibly catchy tunes, this bass-drums-guitar quartet knows when to add a touch of keyboard or an echo to the vocal track. "Sound Again" is one of the album's most striking songs. Its wordless melody line and catchy acoustic guitar strumming are irresistible. When the simple majestic keyboard part and vocal layers are added, pop beauty is achieved. It's a virtually lyric-free anthem whose only subject is its own sound. <I>--Fred Cisterna</I>
Customer Reviews:
art makers really *are* strangulators.......2002-02-28
The album's simplicity belies a deeply psychotic streak in this Hoosier hoedown: talk of monsters speaking in the singer's voice ("telling me what to do"), artists as Green River Killers, etc. Tremendous, creepy stuff. Pretty simple execution (indie guitar, bass, drum rattle) but with nice parsley on the side: echo, keys, sha-la-las. For fanz of the Fall, the Church, the Clean, Mission of Burma...a lot of 80s angular guitar work and Halloween atmosphere.
Big Bill's #5 of 2001.......2001-12-29
This is a mega-excellent CD chocked full of kick ..., warped, twisted, 2-3 minute long songs that are unbelievably catchy yet very freaky at the same time. It's very hard to pinpoint these guys. The closest match is maybe Snow Patrol, but way better (that's saying something considering Snow Patrol is one of the best albums of the year as well). The best track is the haunting #5 Art-Maker. Golden Cloak and Winter are great also as well as the last 2 numbers on the disc, Sound Again and Walking Thru the Lake. Despite great reviews, this CD hasn't recieved the notariety it deserves and I have no idea why. It makes no other "Best of 2001" list that I know of and doesn't recieve nearly the recognition as it peers (only 1 other review so far and ironically is another person from Cincy). Do yourself a favor and order it today. You will not be disappointed.
