Excellence .......2006-01-02
Figured it was time for a 2006 review for this masterpiece, since it had been so long since someone had come along and reviewed it. Shame really. DAF put out so many great releases, but this one stands above the others for me in the EBM arsenal simply for "Absolute Body Control." This song is worth whatever you have to pay to acquire this, which, back when this first came out on vinyl, was a pretty penny for me, and VERY hard to find here in the States. But, if you lived in the SF Bay area as I did, you no doubt would hear the 12" of that song being played in all the clubs of any consequence, along with all other manner of EBM stunners. But, that song alone really captures all that is EBM, and signifies what Nitzer Ebb was going to come along and do a few years later (and even looked right at DAF while doing it...note the DAF song "Muscle" and Nitzer Ebb's..."muscle and hate, muscle and hate...."). You in the scene know of which I speak. But, I digress.
Get this. That's my point. Short and sweet. It really gets no better when it comes to DAF, though you can't go wrong with anything of theirs.
EARLY TRANCE FROM SYNTH DUO.......2003-06-05
Isn't it strange how many synth-duo's there were in the early 1980s? Eurythmics, Yazoo, OMD and others gave the era a distinct flavour, while the pioneers were of course Suicide who launched their career in the seventies. The vocals on this interesting mix of synthpop and trance textures over early 80s dance beats are entirely in German. Liebe Auf Den Ersten Blick (Love At First Sight) has a minimalist sound not unlike some of Depeche Mode's stuff, whilst the beat speeds up for El Que, a fast dance number that is embellished by female vocals to balance the male voice. Goldenes Spielzeug (Golden Toy) provides some much needed variety as the instrumental textures (including chimes) actually sound fresh and there's a lovely discernible melody line; even the vocal sounds more lively, as if it's actually going somewhere. Ich Will has a pounding beat, not unlike the sound of Nitzer Ebb, whilst hypnotic percussion and percolating synths colour the instrumental Absolute Körperkontrole whilst Verschwende Deine Jugend has a jagged rhythmic and nervous vocals. Greif Nach Den Sternen (Reach For The Stars) has an ominous buildup with the synths sounding somewhat like trumpets, for a satisfying closing track. Although DAF created interesting electronic textures, this album is somewhat lacking in the melody department and can appear monotonous at times.
Less inspired than their previous efforts.......2001-06-27
After the landmark albums "Die Kleinen und die Bösen" and "Alles ist gut", the release of "Gold und Liebe" was followed with little interest, since there were no surprises: this album is a poppier follow-up to "Alles ist gut" (the structure is almost the same), sacrifying their dangerous aura in favour of a more hedonistic form of pleasure. Their sound has a little bit more of colour, but it is much easier to find sequences or texts alike to other from their previous albums. Nicer but also showing some void.
DAF did not let us breathe.......2001-02-25
This work appeared in the same year as 'Alles ist gut', and while it is slightly inferior it spreads a bit the scope of this duo's music. DAF is a key to understand the development of electronic music, and is a must for the F242 or Klinik's fans; No song stands out but all of them constitute a cohesive work which, as all DAF's cds, work best as a whole than individually;
