"I get put in the back in the discount rack...".......2005-11-04
"...like another can of beans." -- Billy Joel
No, I don't mean that as a put down; but I can answer the question of why this compilation was released: "What Do I Have to Do."
Stabbing Westward fans will quibble over which tracks should have been here as opposed to others, as they do with "The Essential" collection. But when it comes to actual airplay, it's rare if you hear anything but this title track on mainstream radio. This disk is manufactured for those people who know nothing about SW except this one actually played "hit".
Likely, you will find it stocked in grocery stores, dollar stores and other like places who have the traditional "5.99" CD rack on their sales floors. And though SW is too great an artistic force to be truly "one hit wonders", that is what the general public thinks they are, hard as this may be to accept. Because, let's face it, to the industry who publishes chart positions, commercial success is all that matters.
But, really, almost any Stabbing Westward is good, and a discount disk like this one can do much to introduce a great band to an even wider audience, who may then seek out their back catalogue.
If your looking to explore Stabbing Westward without shelling out a lot of cabbage, this will do nicely.
An odd sampler of Stabbing Westward's first three albums.......2005-07-05
I'm not exactly sure what the point of this collection is. The track listing doesn't really qualify it as a greatest hits album. It was also released several months after the Essential Stabbing Westward, which further confuses it's purpose.
The choice of tracks is very odd. The band's third album, Darkest Days is overemphasised. 5 of the tracks on this are from that album. There are also two tracks from the band's debut, Ungod, and three from their sophomore effort, Wither Blister Burn & Peel. There is nothing from their eponymous swan song album. There are also no rarities included. The choice of tracks is odd, because it looks like they just took random songs from the albums, as some singles are left off.
One thing this disc does have in it's favor is the very low price. $8 for 10 songs is a very reasonable price. The songs are also good, but Stabbing Westward's albums were pretty solid, so that's no surprise.
