Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Steamhammer-Relections.......2000-06-20

I had this album around 1970. It was originally titled "Reflections" here in the states. It had a blueish-purple cover with reflections of the group like off the waters surface. One friend told me it looked like an acid trip. It is a good album, especially for those who like early English BLUES-ROCK. Songs range from BO-DIDLY-MUDDY WATERS rock-blues prgressions to one song that has flute acompanyment that is JETHRO TULL like. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars Fusion Blues Combines High Energy With a Hint of Melancholy.......2000-02-17

In some aspects this album reminds me a little bit of "Cream". Or perhaps, maybe "Hawkwind"; with a little bit less psychedelia. In any event, this is one CD worthy enough for any Blues/Psychedelic Rock enthusiast's collection. The vocalist has a bit of an "earthy" sound but is more than adequate for this type of genre. The lead guitarist has a very clean and structured approach and a flowing style that compliments rather than detract from the music. This is definitely an obscure album in the States, but is certainly one worth obtaining!

4 out of 5 stars bruceski is essentially right see his review.......1999-08-19

Good thorough review bruceski. For fans of this era and type there is a strong blues feels but with that Jethro Tull debut (This Was) flair utilizing the services of guest flautist Harold McNair (The Fence B&C records long deleted)for that softer jazz approach on certain tracks. If you like the direction of those tracks the second album SteamhammerII with Steve Joliffe as a permanent member on flute and sax is marvellous.Kieran White and Martin Pugh are really reaching and succeeding compositionally as well as from a performing stance. The cd was available I can not attest to its continued availability.

4 out of 5 stars Essential British Blues.......1998-11-16

If your reading this you must already know something about one of the great unknown bands of the 60's British blues scene. On this, their debut album, the band blends blues, folk and psycheldelic elements into a wonderfully original mix. Somewhat more mature than contemporaries (such as Cream and early Zep) Steamhammer's 1st record made them farily substantial in Europe (particularly Germany) and they subsequently focused most of their energy on that market. The highlights of this record are the vocals of Kieran White (somewhat like John Mayal, but more soulful) and the interplay of the guitars. Martin Pugh on lead is especially outstanding as he alternates between acoustic and electric effortlessly. For trivias sake: One song, Junior's Wailing, was later covered by Status Quo and was fequently used as their opening number in live shows. Also, rhythm guitarist and song writer Martin Quittenton was recruited to play on Rod Stewart's debut album (along with Martin Pugh) and wound up staying and going on to co-write some of Stewart's best songs from the 70's including Maggie May.
