Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars King King is wicked, wicked good blues.......2006-12-09

I was set to see this band at the Hootenany in OC (Calif.) and the day before the show, the day before, they broke up. I about cried. A few months later Lester Butler was dead. (The same thing happened in reverse with Joe Strummer - saw him at the Hooteneny in July and he passed away in Nov.) Yeah, the Red Devils had far and away the best "coulda been" potential of any band I've ever known. Hell, this one album is enough to put them up in my top 5. Real, wicked good blues. Fierce with much soul. Butler was completely in the zone and pulled of some amazing harp licks. You have to listen to it and pass it along.

4 out of 5 stars Blown away in L.A........2005-03-11

I had the pleasure of seeing the Red Devils open
for John Lee Hooker in Los Angeles (1992). Our jaws hit the
floor. I ran out and bought the audio tape (1992).
I wore that out and then purchased another. The harmonica
playing is outstanding! A fine example of dynamics in a
blues band. A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Good hard driving blues live..........2005-02-26

I bought this because I had remembered the Red Devils off the "LA Rockabilly" record that had come out in the 80's. That version of the band did rockabilly and had a female singer. The bass player in that band was Jonny Ray Bartel who would go on to play in the Knitters. When this record hit the stores I picked it up because of the name of the band and saw that Bartel was involved and decided to give it a try. I really did not know what to expect and was surprised it was a live blues record, and a damn fine one at that. This is tuff blues, not boohoo stuff. It is rough and edgy and it really is a shame this is all they really ever did. I wish more blues bands would take this road and not the keep doing the same old thing. This is a kick in the pants hard driving record that more people need to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Can you handle it?.......2002-12-30

Have you been listening to that watered down, weak, and ridiculously soft blues that is coming out today? If so, you need to put down your copy of "Mr. Blues King" and go buy a copy of this now.
