Amazon.com essential recording
Only Rush could have pulled this off, and only in the '70s. 2112--the title suite of the band's 1976 breakthrough album--is a comically pretentious, futuristic rock opera written by a nerdy drummer and sung by a whiny-voiced geek. It also happens to be a great piece of rock & roll that lifts the listener through a variety of moods and textures from genteel acoustic ("Oracle") to thrilling metal ("The Temples of Syrinx"). Perhaps realizing that they had taken conceptualism about as far as it could go, even these guys backed off on the epic hero stuff for later releases. 2112 still stands as one of the great signposts of the prog-rock era. --Michael Ruby
Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2007-05-12
One of the best ever. The 2112 suite covers the entire spectrum of rock music, from driving rhythms to great acoustic guitar, a masterpiece. Twilight Zone has got to be one of the most underrated Rush songs (to me and what I've heard people say) that they have done. Great album from start to finish.

Just sample some of Europe s still working prog bands and artists up to now . Now , onto 2112 . Rush , a band i have not had the time or privilige of reading much on , has been of my liking since my adolescence . Now , about 16 years after changing ' musical ' paths i have come to value this great album again .
When i first heard this it floored me , as it did when I acquired it again not long ago . It has great melodies , and does not bore for one instance . It is amazing that it has that capabilty after ( now ) 31 years .
The prog - or music - world in 76 was going through intriguing stages . Floyd had just delivered WYWH . Genesis had begun working with Bil Brufford , and Gabriel was not singing anymore . Frampton had just released comes alive . It was an intriguing - indeed - time . I was one year old ( in 76 = ) ) Ok ..
So , after letting you know relevant info on that year , in musical history let s just say Peart, Lee and Liefson made a Bona fide record . There are albums that can be heard throughout without the need of skipping songs . But this is one that really leaves the listener content .
On a techincal note , I d love ot know what kind of sound system Rush used in the late 70 s to promote their albums , and please their fans ( live ) . Live rigs are always important . Being an avid Grateful Dead fan , there is a wonderful book called GD gear that tells of all the gear the group used in its 30 year history . If anyone knows any of this ( of Rush ) , feel free to comment on this data .
My other album of this group i recommend is hemispheres . Well done album . Rush s musical catalog for my liking should begin with any of these two albums . Although there are the earlier ones that delight ( Fly by night ) .
The 2112 suite ( especially the overture , discovery and the dream ) and the song Tears , have to be among the best songs made in 20th century music history . Like a good bottle of wine , this album has aged to an intoxicatingly ( good ) level . Enjoy . God bless Liefson , Peart and Lee for this ..
One of the best hard rock albums of all time.......2007-03-26
First of all, Amazon.com should remove or edit the "official" Michael Ruby review above; there is no need to refer to Geddy Lee and Neil Peart in such a manner. Very unprofessional and silly review.
Anyway, "2112" is a classic by any measure. Rush basically INVENTED a new genre of music with this album - Progressive Metal. Even the ridiculously anti-Rush Rock & Roll Hall of Fame puts this on their list of the 200 best rock albums of all time. This album, in my opinion, is one of three albums that Rush has created that really stand the test of time and are true rock classics (the other two being "Moving Pictures" and "Counterparts"). This album sounds fresh and current even today. What other band in 1976 had a sound like this?
The title track crafts an interesting story of a future ruled by an authoritarian group and one man's struggle to re-introduce music to the world after finding an ancient guitar. It's a masterpiece, both musically and lyrically. The other songs on this album are very good as well, especially "Passage to Bangkok" and "Something for Nothing".
After the lackluster "Caress of Steel" album, it's amazing that Rush created a classic like "2112"; this was clearly a turning point for the band, and they really haven't stopped making good music since this album.
Condescending Review from Amazon not quite accurate........2007-03-25
I'm no die-hard Rush fan, but I know my rock history & Amazon's review(of an Amazon essential recording no less, now in the R&R HoF Definitive 200 albums list [#198])by Michael Ruby doesn't quite do justice to either the band or the album. The band has been around now for more than 35 years, but critics still harp on the same things: poor vocals, pretentious lyrics, & nerdy drummers, failing to take the band's progression into account & trivializing their early works. Further, if someone only reads the Amazon editorial review, he(or she) would get the impression that after this record, Rush stopped making prog-rock records. I know for a fact that they didn't stop making songs under 10 minutes until 1982's "Signals". It's not as if they suddenly woke up and said, "hey, those rock critics are right, we ARE bombastic & pretentious". The review also fails to mention that all three members of the band are respected BY THEIR PEERS & have each won awards for their musical skills. In the end, that's the problem with rock critics: they always have their reputations at stake, which is why the professional Amazon reviewer can't come out and say that he likes it without dousing his words in irony & campiness. It's uncool for rock critics worth their salt to actually admit that they like Rush; if it were cool, Rush would be in the R&R hall of Fame. So, dear reader, do me a favor & click YES if you agree the reviewer Michael Ruby hasn't done justice to the band or record in his review.
By the way, the live version of "2112" on "Different Stages" is an excellent example of how 1) Geddy Lee's vocals have mellowed over time & 2) Rush's musicianship has further improved since 1976.
