4 out of 5 stars and then we go doot..........2007-03-19

Freur, who didn't have a name, came around in the 80s and their song received airplay in the UK. I knew this song at the time, the Doot Doot Song it was called because nobody knew what to call it, but it was well-liked, at least by me and my crowd, despite the lack of lyrics, which actually made the song better - much like Transatlanticism by Deathcab for Cutie - which has few lyrics except "I need you so much closer" - the Doot Doot Song reminds me of that in some ways.

It is, for those of you who were not alive in the 80s, or don't remember the song, the song you hear as Tom Cruise rides up in the lift in Vanilla Sky with his 'technial support' from his life support services as he rides to the roof-top (an excellent choice of a song, i think, for the moment, for what it's worth.) It's the scene where Tom must make his final choice; will he face that Vanilla sky and jump or continue his journey with extended life? I won't be a spoiler if you haven't seen the film... but that song that you will hear if you do see it is the Doot Doot song by Freur (who didn't even have a name when they first started out, btw).

Somehow, their music managed to cross the Atlantic from the UK, despite sales that were not so great but mid-chart ratings which weren't so bad. I am trying to compare to the Doot Doot song to something and all i can think of is Transatlanticism in terms of that it is all music and synth and virtually no lyrics, and more, that it is a freakin' great song to drive to and to me, that counts for everything since i like to drive my lil' Mini Coop like a speedster or Penelope Pitstop ...

I don't care what anyone says - take a listen. Hey, it made my music column on the List of the Moment on Blogcritics, and that's not easy; Volume Number 21.

Cheers,

s.r.p.

5 out of 5 stars sergeant peppers of synth pop.......2007-02-24

This album was my all time favorite for....well, its still one of my all time favorite. There was so much mystery to what this band was and how they got so much detail in their sound. I always said that this was the 'sergeant peppers of synth pop'. Why had no one heard of them back then? Because it was so good. That was the decade of 'no taste' you know. There are layers and layers of incredibly tastefull musical arrangements and production. I listened to this album over and over for years and always heard a new little detail in the songs. Absolutely uncomparable to any underworld or anything ever! Nobody has put so much soul into pop/synth wierdness since. When the cd came out they added that horrible sea shanty diddy...that has to go.

1 out of 5 stars Doot, Doot - Boot, Boot.......2005-11-25

What if they made an album and nobody came? This is that album

4 out of 5 stars Doot-Doot is Good Good.......2004-08-22

I am going to use this review to concentrate on the single "Doot-Doot". Plenty of early techno like beats and nonsense lyrics is whats make Doot-Doot, yet that is not to say these synth beats are bad, it's a great example of early New Wave. To be honest i would like the song if the lyrics were just "and now we go, doot-doot" with the doot-doot in the background. Near the end some synth riffs come in, and with the 'doot-doot' in the background it sounds quite nice. The rest of the album isnt bad either.

5 out of 5 stars How did I miss this for all these years?.......2003-02-25

I stumbled across Underworld (Mk1) in the early 90's and Change the Weather and Underneath the Radar are among two of the most-played CDs I own. Somehow I missed the connection between Freur and Underworld until just recently, and I have to say this sounds just like classic Underworld - It fits nicely with the other two albums in feel and style.
