Only the Strong Survive.......2004-07-20
Boyde Rice gives us an unforgiving philosophy to live by. The strong suvive, the history of man is the history of war etc... but is he wrong? That is the point. Ragnar the Red's book "Might is Right" is the source of this recording. The dilema for the listener will be: this is a harsh philosohy, but its making perfect sense. Oh Lord make it go away. But it is still there with its truth staring you down. I say embrace the words and sonic scapes of "Might" and become stronger for the experience!
I COULD NOT CHANGE MY ABOVE RATING...IT SHOULD BE FIVE NOT ONE STAR!!!
Might is Right?.......2001-03-10
Boyd Rice is certainly a controversial person, in both his beliefs (although I should point out, for those unfamiliar with Boyd, it's not always clear what exacly he really believes, Boyd has been known to be fond of pulling pranks in the past, so it can be hard to tell when he's honest or when he's joking, so you have to look for info on the man himself on your own and come to your own conclusions.) and his approach to music/noise. This album can be seen as controversial in this manner for several reasons. First, the lyrics of this album were taken from (or were they just inspired? I'm not sure.) the book Might Is Right, by Ragnar Redbeard. I feel the need to point out that I have never read this book, I'm not too terribly interested in it and I don't find much about Social Darwinism, based on what I know if it, to be too appealing or interesting. Musically, Boyd does what he's known best for, Noise, although there are some tracks that seem to deviate from being simple "noise", such as The Immolation Of Man, a long, repetetive guitar track. Credo is, in my opinion, more beat driven than what one would expect from a Noise album (from what little I know of noise, I'm still a bit new to this) that's not to say Credo isin't good, I like the track quite a bit, it's almost danceable in my opinion. The final track, Great Destroyers is, by far, the most interesting one musically, in my opinion, the blades scraping each other coupled with the drum beats make for a good track. There is another predominant element to this album, Boyd's spoken word over each track, delievering Social Darwinsim that makes for a pretty grim worldview in my opinion. Although I may not agree with the ideological content, the spoken word does add an element to the album and it would not have the same effect if it were not present. How can I give this a 5 star review if I don't like the ideological aspects though? Well, to put it simply, I liked the musical aspects enough that it made up for it. To sum up my review, this is a pretty good effort, but not for the easily offended or squeamish. I can tune out the philosphy pretty well and just enjoy the music/noise. So if you're not afraid to venture into the dark side and you're looking for something new that you don't hear everyday, feel free to check out Might! by NON/Boyd Rice.
