Customer Reviews:
Terrific for what it is.......2004-07-21
Dianogah is an unheralded instrumental rock band whose richly layered music is fronted by a two bass attack and complimented by straightforward rock drums in addition to simple lines from a fourth instrument (sometimes bass, sometimes guitar, sometimes piano). While this music is certainly from the same genre as bands like Tortise and Mogwai, its standard 4/4 rythms make it more user-friendly and (dare I say) prettier.
The counterveiling lines of the low rythms, trebley drums, and high melody make all the songs complex enough to bear repeated listening, although they often feature predictable or repetetive progressions. Of the Amazon listening samples, "Kaisakunin" is a particularly soft and sparce example of Dianogah's music. "At the Mercy" shows off the interplay between instruments and range of emotion that makes this music work. "Time for a Game" sports rare vocals, which are sung in the talky Yo La Tengo vein. "Sometimes" is a brief interlude, and "Indie Rock Spock Ears" is a long, rambling number that is perfectly representitive of Dianogah's sound.
The meat of this album lies outside of the listening samples, but if you like what you hear, this is the perfect place to start exploring instrumental/post rock type music. If you're already a fan of bands like Mogwai, Fugazi, Tortise, or even lighter stuff like Sea and Cake or American Analog Set, Dianogah ought to be up your alley.
A rare find.......2001-12-17
There are very few albums that I consider flawless, and this is one of them. It does not matter that the music may be simplified, the melody and structure of every song is amazing.
Double Bass Attack.......2000-07-28
Purchased this album on the strength of one song heard off the "Reach The Rock" soundtrack.
This album is superb. Great rhythms and superb interplay by the two bassists.
Worth every penny.
