Album Description

Produced by Ben Hillier who has worked with Blur & Elbow. Tom's self-titled debut album, released in 2000, announced the arrival of a rare & singular new talent. It's subsequent Q Magazine, Mercury Prize & Brit nominations merely confirmed a major talent had arrived. The album, of course, went on to figure in the end-of-year Top 10 lists of Q, The Observer, Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Times, Independent & Time Out, 'Just Like Blood' marks a huge step forward. In terms of sound, scope & style, it is a bigger, braver & possibly even darker work than its acclaimed predecessor. It feels contemporary, yet stands alone. The themes of the album are again dislocation & dissatisfaction & desire for escape. DB Records. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why is this just an import?.......2004-04-06

Given the reviews of his first album, one would assume that his second would get a domestic release, but no - the wise ones at Arista or db or whoever decided in their infinite wisdom NOT to release Tom McRae's second album in the USA. Pity us poor americans - the majority will be missing out on one of the most beautiful, introspective, melancholic and thoughtful albums in recent memory. This is an artist to whom the word "art" applies - and not in that pathetic, "anything anyone does creatively is art" crap; this music, if you have a conscience, emotive response, or simply respond to beauty, is more than rewarding in a very deep vein. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Bloody Brilliant.......2003-10-20

A studio isn't enough to stop Tom McRae's strong, sincere, and haunting voice from coming through clearly. There is hope and questioning and such intensity. Thank goodness this genre is making a comeback and that Tom McRae is leading the way. Buy this now, the import tax is more than worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Playing to the crowd........2003-08-18

Despite a great respect and passion for Tom McRae's music now, I wasn't sure I liked his voice the first time I heard him sing; but then I couldn't get the songs out of my head: they just kept floating through my consciousness until I was forced to go back and listen again... and again... and again. Tom McRae is an amazing musician.

Don't Buy If You Play Your Music on a Mac

I find it ironic this disc is "copy protected" so I won't be able to play it on my system. Since I listen to all my music on my iPod, this makes this thing worthless. Yes, I am savy enough to know the workarounds (defacing the copy pro track with a sharpie), but I shouldn't have to damage my discs to get them to play.

Loved his first disc, and this one is probably great. To further the irony I guess the only way I'll find out is to steal it.
