Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Retrospective of Both Jamaican and UK Ska.......2006-08-03

The "Best of Ska" issued by the British import label Disky Records is a unique collection of Jamaican influenced ska. There are few collections of ska that include a good cross section of the earliest ska classics from Jamaica in the Sixties in the same collection as music of the Great Ska Revival in the United Kingdom in the Eighties.

The "Best of Ska" may disappoint the ska purists but the consistent quality of this massive 3 disc cd is the best argument for musical pluralism I've ever heard. Hard core music collectors often develop tunnel vision and dismiss innovation, simply on the basis of its "inauthenic" origins and end up missing a lot of great music in the process. As such, the music of younger generation of UK ska players should be judged on it's own merits, and not a set of "a priori" standards established by musical snobs.

It's a shame there isn't more collections like this one because both traditional Jamaican ska and UK revival ska are complimentary versions of the same thing. Just as the music of blues revivalists like Paul Butterfield, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Johnny Winter complimented the blues of the old timers like Muddy Waters, Albert King and Howlin' Wolf, similarly the younger generation of UK ska revival groups is great music on it's own terms.

For those music fans that became acquainted with ska when the music of ska's golden age became an element the punk rock movement in the late Seventies, the "Best of Ska" is bumper crop of cherry picked delights. Early 2-Tone Records stalwarts like the Specials, Madness, Selector and the Body Snatchers are the menu.

For those fans of the glory years of Duke Reid's Trojan label there is plenty of the old classic ska. Many of the Trojan recordings that placed Jamaican ska at the top of British music charts in the Sixties are included. I counted 34 of the 54 excellent selections as being authentic first generation ska hits in England including, "Red Red Wine" by Desmond Dekker, "Guns of Navarone" by the Sktalites, "Monkey Man" by the Maytals,"Let's Do the Rock Steady" by the Epiothians, "Jamaican Ska" by Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, "Sweet Sensation" by the Melodians, and "Doctor Dick" by Lee Scratch Perry.

What is surprising about the 56 selections in the "History of Ska" is the compatibility of the old school traditional ska and new school punk influenced ska. Eighties 2-Tone groups like the Specials and Madness' hard-charging revved up punky ska is played so expertly, the younger generation of Brit players earn credibility on their own terms.

I came across ska music in 1979 when I purchased the debut album of the UK ska revival group the Specials. Thanks to the Specials' music, I developed an interest in Jamaican ska that has lasted three decades.

For my own taste, "The Best of Ska" is the best collection of both first generation Jamaican ska and sounds of the young Turks of the UK ska revival, a decade later. The 3 CD set has enough musical space to be an excellent primer for an aspiring student of this wonderful music.
