Safe as Scouser Milk.......2004-08-29
Despite the fact that Ella Guru have taken their moniker from a Captain Beefheart song, they are not wacky or in anyway copy that type of music. In fact I would say that these Liverpudlians tend to lean on the alternative country side. `First Album' (yes, its their first album) is one of the most delicate and fragile records I have heard so far.
`First album' starts off with the Sigur Ros sounding `Noisy Insects' and then segues into the alt-countryish `They Called for Us', and basically the whole tone of the album is set. There is a lot of innovative sounds and despite the mellow atmosphere there is always an expectation to what the next track will offer. I am quite excited with this album because with each listen it gets better and better and its also proves that you don't have to be an American to make authentic sounding alternative country music. Mind you, aving said that Ella Guru tend to mix genres as well on some sounds, like the Jazz inflected `Blues is the Root'. Definitely one to listen to at night before bedtime. A must have.
